Letter sent today:
I wish everyone a safe, happy Thanksgiving weekend. Just wanted to make sure you knew:
- Students are recording thinking on a sticky note or in the box set up in their Reader’s Notebook for this week. I will be using this set up for this quarter and reviewing it weekly. It begins on Monday and goes through Sunday. So by next Monday the chart for this week should be done. I will grade it when I collect the notebook weekly letter.
- Last year when we moved on to a new quarter I noticed “A” students suddenly doing nothing which jeopardized the new marking period’s grade, this is already happening with a few students now. Please look over your child’s notebooks regularly and make sure nightly homework with reading is complete. Especially weekly letters.
- I told 5B their ILA and health grades Tuesday. I told 5A their reading grade then and today I told them the writing and health grade too. There should be no surprises when report cards are issued December 1, 2009.
- Mrs. Goodman our Basic Skills teacher who comes in daily is retiring. Some students did not finish their cards in class and would like to do so at home. Please make sure it is back on Monday, November 30th her last day.
- Pen-Pal letters due back next Wednesday. Info class website and a sample. Please send back the 6th grade letter too so we can place it in their Writer’s Portfolio along side a copy of the response to keep as a memory.
- Some students wanted to finish publishing their realistic fiction story at home this weekend. Ok, please make sure it is returned.
- Anyone not done will have to finish it by next Wednesday. We are moving into nonfiction and writing personal essays, little if any class time will be available to finish.

Some students were out when 5B discussed Pen-Pals. Some will be out for TAG when we discuss it tomorrow with 5A so I have an information link along with the sample letter I showed students. Response letters need to follow proper letter format (especially paragraphing and mechanics). Return all by next Wednesday or sooner. Emails are good too.
