About The Teacher Label:
About The Teacher
This is my 26th year at CJR 9. I look forward to coming to school every morning. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities. 2005-present We are implementing a 6 day schedule. Because of this we do not have Science class every day. New challenges have emerged in completing our required curriculum. It will be extremely important for students to maintain an updated planner and try to set aside some time each day for science whether they are scheduled for class that day or not. Students MUST complete independent work as assigned to keep up with the curriculum. I received my Masters of Science in Educational Science from Ramapo College in May of 1999. To earn that degree, I had to create a web site and project to be implemented with my students. I chose to create a project which integrated the curriculum I taught with the classes I completed for my degree. That project is called "Survey the Ecosystems of Barbour Pond" We will be using this project during the fall and spring. The web address is : http://mset.rst2.edu/portfolios/t/tarant_l/ I was very fortunate to have received 3 $5000 Chase Active Learning grants to help me carry out my project to purchase new equipment. 2003-2004 We received a new grant for a 7th grade project called "Portfolios of Power" Each subject area will work on a different aspect of power. In science class we will be learning how to complete a storm study for each type of natural disaster. The science portion is called "The Power of Mother Nature" You will also find information for this project under the link for Weather Wizards. 7th grade students will become Disease Detectives as they learn the Science of Epidemiology - This is the science of public health. I have been working with Dr. Kaelin of Montclair State University since 2000 in creating and teaching the "Detectives in the Classroom" curriculum. We will complete some of the lessons in class at the end of the year. Some students will be chosen to participate in an after-school epidemiology public health club. 2004-5 Again we were given $5000 by JP Morgan Chase to complete a project called The Good, Bad and Ugly Truth About Drugs. Students complete extensive research on a drug and then create a Power Point Project which is used to teache what they have learned to classmates. If there is time they also present thier projects to 5th grade students.
Mission Label:
Mission
School Motto: The school work I am asking you to do is important, I know you can do it, and I won't give up on you! My mission is to see that each and every student reaches his or her potential. With hard work and dedication this can be achieved. I hope that my enthusiasm for the Science and Health topics we cover will carry over to my students.
