How can I best prepare my chld for the New Jersey Ask State Test?

Don't stress out about the test! Let your child know that the test is a
celebration of all that they know and are able to do. Make sure they get
alot of sleep and eat a breakfast that is not high in sugar. Remind your
child that they will do very well since the strategies and skills that they
need have been developed since September!
If possible, have your child get practice on Studyisland.com to become more
familiar with "test type" questions. It would be beneficial to do a couple of
exercise on this website with your child.

Please encourage reading and take time to talk about what is being read.
When your child has writing homework, expect your child to write using
complete thoughts that include description and detail.

As always, encourage your child to do their very best. If students see that
their parents are not anxious about testing, then they most likely will not
be anxious. In school I will be introducing ways to relax along with
positive "self affirmations" I am confident that your student will do
awesome!

My child does not seem interested in reading? How can I help?

With so many activites in a child's day, reading at home can become low on
the priority list. Research shows that students who read often become better
readers and writers! Schedule time when everyone reads in the family. At
first it is hard to turn off the t.v. and video games, but the results really
do pay off. It also helps to go to the library and have your child find
books that have topics that he or she is interested in! Take time to read to
your child and have them read to you! Good luck!

What is the best way to get in touch with Mrs. Vacchio?

It is best to call the school(732-613-6820) and have the call transferred
down to the classroom. Please let the office know if the call is an
emergency or if your call needs my immediate attention. If I am not able to
speak with you immediately, the call will go into my voice mail and I will
get in touch with you that afternoon or evening.

*You may also e-mail me through this website and I will return messages. I
check my e-mail daily.

How can I get my child to share more about what he or she is learning in class

Just think....if your child was to ask you, "How was your day of work?", how
would you answer? Probably in the same way that your child answers when
responding to the same question about school! Your child's answer may not
have alot of details because it takes alot of time and energy to "rehash" the
day. Try asking questions like:
*What was the best thing that happened in school today?(Recess in not an
acceptable answer!)
*What do you like best about______________________(name,subject)?
*What do you like about the story you are currently reading in school?
*What reading strategy are you practicing in school?
*Tell me about your independent reading book?
*What is the funniest thing that happened today?
*What are you learning about in_______________(subject)
Hopefully questions like these will help spark some dialogue about school.

***Homework assignments will give you a chance to see what your child is
learning, so after letting your child do the work independently, please take
the time to look over the assignments and give positive praise. Have your
child explain to you how he or she thought of the answers.
***Finally, Teacher Web is designed to encourage communication between home
and school, so look for updates with you child.
