Dear Parents,
The students had a great week at school! They enjoyed read-aloud poems from Shel Silverstein’s book, Runny Babbit. They are enjoying learning about poetry with a focus on famed poet Shel Silverstein and his works. The students had fun acting out several different Reader’s Theatre plays.
In Writer’s Workshop, the students created their own cinquain poetry about the sun, stars, constellations, and electricity. They practiced writing with new vocabulary in voice, as well as understanding how voice in writing makes stories organized and detailed. In grammar studies, we continue learning about root words, prefixes, and suffixes. We are reviewing pronouns, nouns, adjectives, and verbs.
In math, we are working on estimating dollars and cents, estimation of weight and mass, multiplying three-digit numbers, using estimation to verify answers, and simple division. We learned about using parentheses, compatible numbers, and rounding to the nearest dollar. We are learning about geometric solids, counting cubes, and volume. We continue to practice angles, symmetry, and area. We compare fractions; learn multiplication facts, practice equivalent fractions, and measure length and mass in metric units.
Science class took us on adventures to explore a unit study of space and technology. This unit will incorporate lessons, activities, and investigations focused around the Solar System, stars, constellations, and galaxies. The students enjoy reading, writing, and viewing photographs and videos of space and the Solar System in which we live.
In social studies, we continue with our study of economics. This unit covers activities to learn about buyers, sellers, goods, services, supply, demand, needs and wants. They are learning about, through hands-on activities and independent research of real-life situations, about taxes and the way our economy operates. The students are creating their own business portfolios independently. All students had a wonderful time on our field trip to Ellis Island, as an extension of our previous unit study of immigration.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend! I am excited to see where the next few weeks of school take us. Stay tuned!
Love,
Ms. Maydick
