April 18th
This week in math we are continuing our concentration in data analysis, with a focus in circle graphs. Students used their previous knowledge of ratios and percents to solve for portions of the whole in circle graphs. Monday students used a class survey of favorite movies to create a graph. Later in the week we will discuss reasonable sample sizes and population. Next week there will be a chapter test on Friday. Students may use
IXL
to prepare for the test, concentrating in sections 6th (R.4, R.10, R.11) and 7th (O.7, O.8, O.10 and 0.11).
April 2nd
Last weeks concentration was angles. We began the week with measuring existing angles and using a protractor to create new angles. Tuesday the students played several online games practicing measuring and estimating angles in degrees. You can find the games on my website under the centers tab. Wednesday we focused on complimentary and supplementary angles. Please ask your child to explain the difference between the two. This week we will wrap up the geometry unit with a project assessment. Next week we will start our unit on Data Analysis. There will be a quiz next Friday, April 13th, 2012.
March 8th
During math on Monday, we built a family of cylinders and discovered the relation between the dimensions of the original rectangle and the resulting pair of cylinders. We used a regular sized piece of paper and scissors to create cylinders with varying dimensions while maintaining the same surface area.
We then ordered the cylinders by their volumes and drew conclusions about the relationship between the cylinder's dimensions and its volume. Finally, the students calculated the volumes of the family of cylinders with constant area. Even though each cylinder was constructed using the same lateral surface area, the resulting difference in volumes was astonishing. Ask your child about the final results, and check out the picture above to see our progress.
Second Trimester Study Skills Games
March 1st
This week in math we are concentrating on volumes of geometric solids. Monday we watched a Brain Pop video on a variety of prisms and successfully completed the online quiz. During class we used cube manipulatives to find volumes of irregular solids and an online manipulative to play a quiz game. Check out my
website
for the link to this great online resource and practice. The students used these resources to find the area of bases and counted the amount of rows each shape included. This helped connect the real-world shapes to the formula learned in class (V=area of base times height). Today we completed a math exploration using wood blocks and composite shapes, ask your child about the activity . Each student can find the volume of any prism as long as they can find the area of the base.
Volume Practice
February 23rd
This week in math we concluded our second semester with a surface area test. Students were asked to find the surface area of several regular geometric solids, then explain their process for problem solving. Thursday we watched a Brain Pop video highlighting the volume of solids, our next concentration of study. Over the next few weeks we will begin to prepare of Pi Day, March 9th, while concluding our geometry unit.
February 16th
This week in math we are continuing to prepare for our test Friday.
(Test postponed until 2/22)
Students will use the packets in their binders to practice and study for their surface area assessment. This assessment will concentrate on each student's understanding of the process of finding surface area. While accurate answers are important, the process and explanation of the process will be our main focus, as this is the grade level standard. Students will use their "writing in math" skills to communicate the way they arrived at each solution. We have practiced this type of assessment during our recent projects. I am confident this will be a rewarding experience for all. Please check my
website
regularly for updates and practice.

February 10th
This week in math the students were investigating the surface area of rectangular prisms. Students were each given a grocery item contained in a cardboard box and asked "How does a company decide how much cardboard to purchase for packaging each item?" Students then deduced a strategy to find the surface area for the boxes. Each member of the class communicated their strategy by writing the steps on and index card and presenting their findings to the class. Students were assessed by both their final answer and their constructing of individual strategies. Next week, we will work with cylinders. Please send in 1 or 2 empty grocery items in cylindrical containers. Such items might include oatmeal containers, tea packaging, or potato chip tubes.
January 31st
This week in math we continue our unit on geometry. Monday we made tessellations using pattern blocks. Each child created a shape that could be used in a tessellation. We studied M. C. Escher's artwork for direction, which provided fruitful inspiration. After we completed the artwork students were expected to write about their shapes and the related transformations. Please check them out during your upcoming conferences.
Students should continue to practice IXL regularly, current concepts are on the homework page.
January 23rd
Last week in math we concluded our unit on percents. The students used real-life situations to determine final cost of items being purchased. Each student was given an ad and corresponding coupons. Students were asked to problem solve for final price. Last week we also completed a "Percents in Business" project where each group was given an obstacle a small business might encounter. Students needed to use a variety of skills to solve the problem, which included deduction, reasoning, and trial and error. This week the sixth grade begins a 7 week unit on geometry.
January 10th
This week the students are beginning our short unit on percents, starting with a small review project using percents in real life situations. Each student will be solving a different problem for a new business. Next week, we will watch a Brain Pop video on percents and play Mall Math. Mall Math is an interactive activity that helps students learn about mark-ups and discounts, which ties directly to our sixth grade math standards. We will also learn about simple interest. We will conclude the unit next Friday with a short quiz to assess their understanding of the concept learned. Please remember to check my website often for announcements, homework, and important dates.

This week we are beginning our chapter on rates, ratios, and proportions.
November 21st
This week we began our study of algebraic expressions. Next week we will have a quiz on Wednesday. Next Thursday, the students will dive into ratios and rates.
IXL Practice P.1-P.3 (complete as much as you can by Monday)
November 14th
This week we are completing the last assignments before the end of the trimester, Friday. Our study of rational numbers will be concluded Friday with a test. Monday and Tuesday were work days for our ratio project. The project was completed by the end of class Tuesday. Wednesday we completed review centers in preparation for Friday's test.
