How do I get into GATE?
Selection is through a combination of several factors:
1. Teacher recommendation
2. IQ
3. Standardized testing scores
In addition, for Verbal in fifth grade:
A writing sample taken in the spring of fourth grade
For Math Prime:
A Math test that is given in the spring of fourth grade.

What is the third grade TAG curriculum?
The 3rd Grade TAG Curriculum focuses on developing problem-solving skills.
Students will work with a variety of stimulating activities, such
as "Stories with Holes", verbal picture puzzles (Wordles), logic problems
and court cases. Students will solve court cases through assessing evidence
in order to determine the guilt or innocence of the defendent. A culminating
activity is for the students to create their own mystery.
--------------------------------------
What is the fourth grade TAG curriculum?
Students research topics of their choice using the internet and primary
and secondary sources of information. Students will then take their
information and summarize it as part of a HyperStudio presentation.
HyperStudio is an interactive, multimedia software program that is easy to
use and allows students to be creative in presenting their research. In
HyperStudio, students will create projects including text, graphics,
animation, sound and freestyle painting.

What is the fifth grade TAG curriculum?
The 5th Grade TAG Curriculum is broken up into two major parts. The first
half of the year is spent exploring and understanding the ancient Mayan
civilization from Central America and Southern Mexico through the use of
Voyage of the Mimi II video tapes.
In the second half of the school year, students spend time participating in
a statewide competition called, The Stock Market Game. The Stock Market Game
is sponsored by the New Jersey Council on Economic Education and teaches
students about the stock market and investments. During a ten-week period,
students work together on teams to build an investment portfolio while
trying to make a profit.

What is the fifth grade Verbal curriculum?
The 5th Grade Verbal Curriculum involves reading and analyzing a variety of
short stories throughout the year to develop a better awareness of authors'
use of language and literary techniques. To better enable their
understanding of the literature, students may be asked to write alternative
endings to several stories. Through the learning of storytelling techniques,
students are given an opportunity to perfect their dramatic presentation
skills.
--------------------------------------
Does my child have to do all the homework on the homework page?
No, only what is listed for your child's class.
--------------------------------------
Is the homework required for something that has not yet been presented?
No. Keep in mind that for each grade level, the class is taking place in
four different elementary schools in the district. Due to assemblies and
other interruptions, the classes may be at a slightly different pace. Do the
homework for what has been presented in the class only, and for Verbal, the
creativity questions.
--------------------------------------
What does '3 TAG' mean?
Third grade TAG (Talented and Gifted).
--------------------------------------
Can I change my schedule?
Unfortunately, no. My schedule is the best compromise among the four schools
that I serve, and the three grade levels. Students must be pulled out from
regular academic subjects to attend GATE classes. They may not be pulled
from any of the special areas. If there is a problem that a child is having
because of being pulled out of a subject, the best thing to do is to speak
with the classroom teacher to find out how the work can be made up.
--------------------------------------
What do I do if I'm absent for class?
There are two ways that you can catch up with your class.
1. Ask another of the students in the class what you have missed.
2. Check the Web site for your homework assignment.
--------------------------------------
When is the testing for next year's GATE?
We do testing in the spring. The exact dates will vary from year to year.
--------------------------------------
Is there a way to prepare for GATE testing?
No. Just come as you are and do your best. We do not give advance notice of
the testing, so you can give us your best on the day of your test.
