Reading/Writing Workshop

During Reading and Writing Workshop, your child will focus on many reading
and writing genre.

Reading:
During reading, your child will be learning the skills to become fluent
readers. Each month your child is given a reading log in order to keep track
of their daily reading. It is important that your child is reading every day
for at least 15 minutes. Throughout our year, your child learns a variety of
genre's including fiction and non-fiction. We encourage our children to read
a variety of genre!

Please make sure that their reading log is signed and returned to school on
the due date.

Writing:
During writing, we will look at personal narratives, essays, and realistic
fiction. During each unit, your child will learn different writing skills
and techniques, which will give your child the opportunity to become
creative and independent writers.

We are also learning the importance of keeping a neat and detailed
writer's notebook, along with the expectations of ALWAYS having your
notebook in school and at home. It is important that your child understand
that they are responsible for carrying the notebook to and from school.
Also, they are responsible for following the entry assignments and keeping
them neat.

Although there might not ALWAYS be writing homework, your child will have
the opportunity to experience writing throughout our school week. During
certain weeks, your child will be expected to complete at home assignments,
which will be graded based on a rubric. This rubric must be signed and
returned.

Please feel free to explore your child's writing notebook and enjoy living
their memories, but remember, this is a place for their thoughts and
memories so please don't correct their writing. One way you can support your
child at home is to check to make sure that writing is actually happening at
home. You might do this by asking your child what he or she is working on as
a writer.
