What is an Independent Reading Project?

Students will read three independent reading books this year. One in the
first semester, one in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter. All
books must be on or above grade level. Students are encouraged to peruse
the book store and/or library and figure out what genre works for them. On
the last day(s) of the quarter, each student will share about their current
independent reading book. The sharing guidelines are below. As long as
they show that they have actively read their book, they can receive all of
the possible 30 points for this project.

Sharing Guidelines for Independent Reading:
1)What is the title and author of your independent reading book?
2)Who are the main characters? Which characters are dynamic? Why?
3)What is one quote that strikes you as poignant in the novel? What
does this quote mean? Why does this quote stand out to you?
4)What is one possible theme of this book? Why?
5)Why would you recommend this novel to another student to read?

Why does Ms. Mantuano refer to all students as "friends?"

Ms. Mantuano once taught in a Montessori school. In a Montessori school it
is customary to call all of your students "friends," because this type of
school feels that it creates a community of respect. Since mutual respect
between teacher and student is so important to Ms. Mantuano, she maintains
this practice of respect with her students still today.
