Pickleball

May 15th
Email the answers to the following questions by Friday, May 18th
for either extra credit of two effort points, or the removal of an
unprepared. Just email me using the link at the top right hand side
of the home page and put your name, numbers 1-4 and T for true or F
for false.
1. To put the ball into play, one may serve overhand or underhand.

2. The Double Bounce Rule is the rule by which the ball must bounce
once on each side before volleying may begin.

3. The serve must be made diagonally to an opponent to start play.

4. You may bounce the ball before you serve it into play.

October 31th
There are still too many people forgetting to serve underhand.
An overhead serve is ILLEGAL.
Don't forget the double bounce rule. One bounce on each side,
than volleying may begin.

October 25th
For next class, I would like everyone to work on serving
underhand only. Also make sure you are serving diagonally.
If you feel comfortable with the rules, by all means, start
game
play. Please ask questions if you are not sure about the scoring
and
serving rotation; it IS difficult.
On Thursday, Day 3 will start.

October 16th
Wow, it was nice to see more people active today in class! I'm
worried that the rain will curtail our ladder tournament this week,
in that we'll have to share the gym with others. Today, we were
able
to get set up, but I didn't count any of the scores. Let me know
if
a team you are playing doesn't know the rules. Hopefully, I'll have
a list of the teams posted tomorrow. Remember, games are to eleven
and you must win by two.
October 15th
Begin to think of a partner from your lab day that you would
like to play with for a ladder tournament. A ladder tournament
features a continuous tournament involving a constant reseeding of
teams. Your team will be constantly playing a team either directly
above or below your ranking.
October 9th
All three classes were much better at scorekeeping and rotation
today. Even though it took extra class time, I think it was
beneficial to go over everything again. If you still don't
understand the scoring, let me know. You're probably not the only
one!
October 5th
Remember, if the sum of two scores is even, the serve is done
from the right hand side. If the sum is odd, the serve is done
from the left hand side.
When the first team serves, only one player will serve, when
the second team serves and thereafter, both players from each team
will serve. Each player will serve until their team loses a rally.
I realize this is somewhat confusing.
October 3rd
For the next pickleball meeting, I will select three people to
demonstrate the scoring, serving rotation, and some basic strategy.
Remember the double bounce rule! It seems to be confusing to
some, while others get it right away. See me if you're having
trouble with this rule. Don't be embarrassed, you're not the only
one. Also remember to attack the net ASAP after the double bounce
rule has been satisfied. Make your serving movements small and
don't forget to step to the opposite foot.
September 28th
Period 6/7 did a great job putting the ball into play with an
underhand serve. I didn't have to remind a single person! Period
8/9 could have done a little better job with that. In fact, I
instituted a new penalty of 5 push-ups for anyone serving overhand!
Several students from 8/9 viewed the website and that is great.
Period 12 did a nice job. It was nice having a smaller class on day
4. Remember the double bounce rule.
The serving rotation is similar to badminton. Players A and B
are teammates against players C and D. Player A serve until they
lose the serve, then player B serves, until he/she loses serve.
Then the other team serves with player C serving until they lose the
serve, then player D.
September 27th
When you put the ball into play, use an UNDERHAND serve only.
You may NOT bounce the ball before you hit it. Merely hold the ball
and strike it out of your hand.
The major rule of the game that you will need to get used to is
the Double Bounce rule. Basically, this means that the ball must
bounce once on EACH side before volleying(hitting the ball before it
bounces) can occur. If player A serves to player B, player B must
allow the ball to bounce 1X before player B can return it.
Then...player A must ALSO let the ball bounce 1X before he/she hits
the ball back. Got it? Let me know tomorrow if you understand
this rule.
PICKLEBALL
The serve is made underhand. The paddle must pass below the
waist.
Think throwing a ball underhand, eg. pitching a softball.
The ball must hit the ball from the hand and not from a bounce.
The service is made diagonally cross court like tennis and
badminton.
This means that the person diagonally across from the server should
return
the serve and not the adjacent player.
Only ONE serve attempt is allowed, although if the ball hits the
net
and goes over into the service area, it is allowed as a good serve.
