MEMBERSHIP REPORT – Jean Riccio
	- 476 TOTAL members
-	296 family members
-	180 single members (includes 19 faculty)

TEACHER LIASON REPORT
-	Mr. Dziediak spoke to the staff at the October staff meeting. He
said they seemed receptive to joining the PTA. He asked that if the staff
had any concerns to please bring it to his attention and he would bring it
to the PTA. He has been on jury duty and has not been able to follow up but
he plans to. He will discuss grants with them also including the fact that
you have to be a member to apply for one.

PRESIDENTS REPORT – Cathi Rugulo
-	Book Fair is 12/17 – 12/19, a volunteer sign up sheet was passed
around
-	The EBEF is having a fundraiser in the spring called “Kitchens of
East Brunswick” on 5/4/08. They will highlight 8 homes in town. Each home
will include food samples from a local restaurant. In addition, there will
be raffle baskets. Each PTA is asked to sell at least 50 tickets. The
price will be $45.
-	Cathi introduced a SEPTA representative (Cherie Spielman) to discuss
SEPTA in Churchill. SEPTA meets every month. They run programs in the
community for students with special needs. They are trying to start Buddy
basketball in the town as well as Yoga classes.

PRINCIPALS REPORT
-	Mr. Sutor told us how the Activity Night a couple of weeks ago
turned out really well. He said several hundred attended. He said this
night gives the kids something to do in a positive atmosphere.
-	Discussed the evacuation a couple of weeks ago. There was an odor
of gas (probably from pressure in the gas lines in the science rooms) and
the school was evacuated as a precaution until it was cleared by PSEG and
fire department. He is sorry that the kids had to be outside in the rain.
There are contingency plans in the event of an evacuation that they feel
will last longer. These include having buses come to the school for the
kids to sit on. If necessary, the kids could be moved to an alternate
location.
-	Everything is running smoothly so far this year including the buses
and kids getting to classes on time.
-	One parent discussed her concern about the kids not having enough
time to get to class from one side of the building to the other. Mr. Sutor
discussed the time involved in switching classes and the policies.
-	Mr. Sutor introduced Detective Kevin Zebro who did a presentation
on “Internet Safety”. The presentation was to raise awareness of how to
protect our children from online predators and other threats. It was an
extremely informative presentation!

council/InterAct club activities. The best way to get information is to
check the Churchill PTA website and/or send an email via the website.

all to come out and support student council/InterAct club. It is being held

end of October. Only change will be the membership fees. Churchill PTA is in
good standing with the NJ PTA.

Principal’s Report: Presented by Mark Sutor.
•	“Why aren’t staff members joining PTA?” – Suggestions include:
	1) do not do membership drive during the first week of school. Staff
is overwhelmed with too many other papers at that time.
	2) maybe do the first PTA meeting in the afternoon so that staff
members can attend.
	3) staff is unaware of PTA impact and financial support.
	4) maybe do a PTA Staff Denim Day (district is limited to 4 denim
days).
	5) maybe offer PTA Grants but the staff member must be a paid PTA
member to apply for a grant.
	6) post a list of all staff who are paid PTA members in the faculty
room to thank them for their support.
•	Follow-up to 11-29-07 meeting regarding locker room safety – Dr.
Magistro looking into other security measures. No bullying/harassment will
be tolerated. Parents should reach out to school instead of to the Board of
Education or press when there are bullying incidents. Parents can always
reach Mr. Sutor or Dr. Magistro – use phone or email.
•	PTA funds not needed for extra security cameras. School needs a
security cart (golf cart) for emergency management purposes. Can be used on
a daily basis and can be stored in the garage area near Guidance.
•	“I am Dirt” Assembly for 9th graders only on Wed., Dec. 13th. Anti-
drug/respect message.
•	Activity night went well. Maybe another one will be planned for the
spring. Sponsored by Student Council.

General Meeting - Minutes
Churchill Conference Room
Wednesday, October 18, 2006

Call To Order:
PTA President Katie Spiegler called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

Establishing a Quorum:
Excused from tonight’s meeting: Lorraine Spiotta
Present at tonight’s meeting: Mark Sutor, Katie Spiegler , Sonia Klein,
Neysa Raiti, Jean Riccio, M. Carbone, S. Krantz, C. Canamico, J. Klem,
C. Obi.

Officer’s Reports:

Treasurer’s Report: Presented by Neysa Raiti.
•	Neysa introduced the new budget for the 2006-07 school year.
•	Simon Foundation line removed from budget.
•	Motion to accept the budget. Accepted unanimously.
•	Account has approx. $12,000.00 after expenses.

Membership Report: Presented by Jean Riccio
•	465 paid PTA members since first day of school
•	25 paid staff members.

President’s Report: Presented by Katie Spiegler.
•	Scholastic Book Fair – looking for volunteers to staff the book
fair from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm (7:30 to 12:30 on half day schedule).
•	Reminder to attend the EB Education Foundation Fashion Show on
Wed., November 1. Katie and Lorraine are co-chairs of the
event. Sonia volunteered to put together the Churchill PTA
raffle basket (Victoria’s Secret items) for the event.

Principal’s Report: Presented by Mark Sutor.
•	Churchill Portrait Dedication – said it was a brief ceremony
on Sept. 19th. Portrait of Prime Minister Winston Churchill
donated to our school by the Churchill Foundation. Thank you
to Mr. Scott Kominkiewicz for presentation on “Why is our
school named Churchill Jr. HS?” (trivia – when school was
named, it couldn’t be named after a Republican or
Democratic President so the Board of Ed. went “international”
        and selected Winston Churchill)
•	8th grade assembly scheduled for October 19 with Jeff Yalden
from MTV’s “MADE” program. Will be speaking about being a teen
today for anti-violence and anti-vandalism week.
•	Parent Teacher Conferences starting soon. Follow phone in
procedure for making appointments: Day 1 for teacher requested
conferences only, Days 2 & 3 call in first come, first serve,
        & maximum 3 conferences.
•	Three activity buses now running between Churchill and EBHS.
There is a new bus company that agreed to take on a run between
the two schools and it has alleviated the lack of transportation.
•	Most clubs are up and running. There is still a lot of
confusion with the “pay to play” fees for clubs, but things
        are smoothing out.
•	Cell phone policy – “off and out of sight.” Staff can
confiscate phone and student can get it back at the end of
the day. Second offense – parent must get it back. Most of
the incoming calls to students during the day are parents
        calling their child!

General Topics Discussed:
•	Mr. Sutor mentioned items that the PTA could possibly
consider purchasing for the school – spirit and sportsman-
ship banners for the gym and also glass showcases.
•	There is no teacher liaison to the PTA – Mr. Sutor suggested
seeking out a teacher liaison and perhaps that will help out
        with staff membership.

Adjournment:
President Katie Spiegler adjourned the meeting at 8:30 p.m.
