I'm always on the computer, so why do I need to take this class?

Being adept at "googling" information, instant messaging, rebuilding
computers or creating websites does not necessarily mean that one is
proficient with computer software applications. While all of those skills
are worthwhile, and show you have an interest in technology, we want to make
sure that when you complete this course, you will be able to use the most
common software applications in order for you to be successful in school, as
well as in the workforce.

"Why is this important?" you might ask. A recent study performed by ETS
found that college students are falling short in demonstrating the
information and communication technology skills necessary to be successful
in college and the workplace. Many colleges and universities have begun
administering the ETS iSkills assessment to assist in the placement of
students. Part of the iSkills assessment involves extracting information
from a database, developing a spreadsheet and graphs, and formatting a word
processing document -- you will learn these skills and more in Computer
Studies!

For more information on the ETS research findings, copy and paste this (long)
URL to your browser's address bar.

What do I do if I am absent?

Check this website for the homework agenda and handout downloads. Also ask
a friend what you missed. Remember, you have two days from your return
to school to make up work for every day you were absent.

I'm falling behind in the completion of my labs; what can I do?

Schedule an after school lab session with me. After school labs generally
run Tuesdays through Thursdays. They are intended for students who need
extra time or extra help; they are not intended for students who were off
task during class time. Check the After-School Labs page on this website
for dates.

Can I complete my labs and projects at home?

No; all of your source files are stored on the network and can only be
accessed from your assigned computer, based on the username and password.

I forgot to do my homework; can I make it up?

It is your responsibility to check with me to see if you can turn in your
homework late. If so, expect to lose at least one letter grade for each day
your homework is late.

How can I succeed in this class?

Follow your lab and project instructions and stay on task. If something
doesn't work, re-read your instructions and try again. Take responsibility
for your learning. This means recording the agenda entries, staying on
task, and recording and maintaining your gradesheets. Most importantly, be
a problem solver and enjoy the learning process!
