Computer Careers

Computers have become an important part of everyday life.  From medical imaging, to iPods, to gaming, computer professionals are behind so many of the products that we use on a daily basis.  Your assignment is to explore computer careers by reading the “Computing Degrees and Careers” brochure here.  (If you have problems opening the brochure, go to the Handouts link and open the Word document there.)

Your project is to create a poster about computer professionals, the products they have created, and how these products affect our lives.  Choose any three products mentioned on page 3 of the brochure, or think of products not mentioned.

Poster Requirements - Create a poster, either in Word, PowerPoint or on poster board, with the following items:

·      Names of the 3 products and the type of computer professional behind the product (3 pts).

·      For each product, write two or three sentences describing how computer professionals are involved in the creation of each of the products (3 pts).  (In response to some questions I have received, here is an example:  Many computer professionals are involved in creating cell phones that have greater functionality and are smaller in size.  Computer engineers design the chips so they are smaller and require less energy, and can do more than older chips.  Without the work of these computer engineers, cell phones would be larger and would not be able to take pictures, provide gaming interfaces, or even allow texting.  Do not use this answer in your assignment.)

·      For each product, write two or three sentences explaining how the products have benefited society (3 pts).

·      Include images or representations of the products (3 pts).

·      Include annual salary ranges for the computer professional involved in each product, based upon the 2006 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for New Jersey (click on 15-0000  Computer and Mathematical Science Occupations, then note the "Mean Annual" wages) (2 pts).

·      Include your name, date and username on your poster (2 pts).

Your grade will be based upon the above criteria, as well as the attractiveness and creativity displayed in your poster.  Feel free to embellish your poster with a variety of different materials. (4 pts)
