Committee Descriptions

Looking for a way to get involved with PTSA? Consider joining one of the following committees. Your efforts are always well appreciated and help to keep you connected to your children and our wonderful Community Middle School.

  • Book Fair
A week long book fair is held in the fall.  The committee coordinates dates and facility arrangements, products and inventory and arranges for many parent volunteers for the week of the sale.
  • Clothing/Panther Wear
Coordinates the sales of CMS apparel. Samples are displayed at the 6th grade tour/ice cream social, and at all the Back to School Nights. An order form is also included in the Welcome packet. Volunteers take the orders and submit them to the vendor. When the clothing is delivered to the main office, volunteers label them with students’ names and homeroom teachers’ names.
  • Directory
Compiles and publishes a directory with student contact information.  Information is collected from families in September.
  • Email Blast
Sends emails about upcoming events and meetings to PTSA members.  Emails are sent out on a timely basis.  They contain information about the event; if applicable, direct the reader to the PTSA website for any forms or flyers; and direct them to the chairperson(s) for any comments or questions.
  • Grade Representatives
Coordinates parent volunteers for student activities, including school orientation, year-end activity days, dances, the 8th grade salute and cameos and a number of other functions.
  • High School Scholarship Representatives
Represents Community Middle School on the WW-P High School Scholarship Committee.  The committee awards PTSA scholarship funds based on financial need and academic merit to graduating seniors in the WW-P school district.  Parents of high school seniors in WW-P are not able to serve.
  • Holiday Shop
Sets up and operates the "Holiday Shop" where students can buy affordable gift items during the holiday season. It is held during lunch one week in December. The committee chair orders the merchandise well in advance and will place an order on-line for the items they wish to have available for purchase at the holiday sale. Parent volunteers are needed to work the sales table during lunch periods in early December.
  • Hospitality
This committee obtains and sets up refreshments for Back to School night and PTSA activities/meetings throughout the year.
  • Just Write A Check
Beginning in 2008/2009 the Community Middles School PTSA has adopted a “Just Write A Check” (JWAC) fundraising campaign.  This fall we ask CMS families to contribute to the PTSA by making a tax-deductible donation in lieu of traditional fundraisers.  All of the proceeds go directly to support the programs sponsored by the PTSA.  Families no longer need to be burdened with various fundraising solicitations such as gift wrap, magazines, jewelry, cookie dough, etc.  The PTSA supports and funds educational activities that benefit all CMS students.
  • McCaffrey’s Receipts & Box Tops
By collecting grocery receipts from McCaffrey’s and GM Box Tops, Community Middle School PTSA receives a cash award.  The committee organizes, promotes and tracks program earnings.
  • Membership
Handles the administration of the PTSA membership forms and dues. The membership form includes a place for expressing volunteer interest, which is also tracked by the membership chair, and disbursed to committee chairs upon request.
  • North/South Tailgate Game
Organizes a group ticket purchase for the families of CMS students to attend the North/South Football game. A family fun “tailgate” party prior to the game is also organized by this committee.
  • Panther Press
Compiles information from PTA committee and coordinates content with the school newsletter.  PTA newsletter includes information about past and upcoming PTA events and activities.
  • Reading Program
Close to the end of the school year, this committee sends order forms to 6th, 7th & 8th graders to purchase books through the PTA from the Summer Reading list.  The books, when received, are then delivered to the students.
  • Reflections / Arts In Education
This committee coordinates Community Middle School’s entries in the National PTA’s Reflections program, a program encouraging creativity in literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film/video production.  Entrants receive participation certificates and selected works are advanced to state or national levels.
  • Site Based Council
The CMS Site-Based Council provides a vehicle by which CMS staff, students, parents and other interested stakeholders meet on a regular basis (once a month) to share in the decision-making process and in the development and evaluation of school programs.  The Council addresses the needs of the stakeholders and provides recommendations to the school administration on ways to improve the learning environment, quality of education and quality of life at CMS.
  • Talent Show
Every April the CMS talent show showcases the growing talent of the students and the occasional staff member at CMS with preparations beginning in February with auditions.  Eighth graders are chosen as masters of ceremonies at one Friday evening performance.  A host of parents and teachers facilitate this wonderful opportunity.  Prior acts have included juggling, dancing, singing and bands.  Every year a theme is chosen in the hopes of inspiring many students to exhibit the wonderful and diverse talents of the incredible students of CMS.
  • Teacher Appreciation
To show the community’s gratitude to the teachers, this committee coordinates two luncheons for the teachers and staff of CMS, a “Back to School” luncheon two days prior to the start of school, and a second luncheon in the spring.
  • Website Management
Updates and maintains the Community Middle School PTSA’s website as necessary.
