Homework Policies

Homework will be assigned every night. Assignments will some combination of
the following: language arts practice, math worksheets, spelling practice,
and handwriting. Some students will need a lot of help on homework, while
others will be able to complete work once they get started. It is not
unusual for students to need a lot of help to complete homework in the very
beginning of the year and as the work gets harder. The directions to
worksheets may be confusing to them, causing them to be anxious. Rereading
directions and explaining them, while doing a problem together may lessen
this anxiety.

Occassionally, writing prompts will be assigned for homework where students
will be expected to use sentences beginning with capital letters and ending
with correct punctuation. This is a major skill that we will be practicing
all year long in every assignment.

Second grade begins the start of formal spelling, but we still do encourage
invented spelling, especially if your child experiences difficulty spell
words while writing. To help them spell, first encourage them to sound the
word out and spell it how it sounds. If they do not know how to start the
word, say it slowly for them. This often helps them hear individual letter
sounds. Please do check their spelling and punctuation in their homework
assigments.

In addition to written homework, reading will also be expected. Reading
should be recorded on the reading log sheet. Each week that the student
reads at least 15 minutes for four days, the student will receive a sticker.
When the students has done this for seven weeks, they will be able to pick a
reward.

Please check and sign all homework. If your child struggled on a particular
piece or concept, please let me know through a note or phone call. Second
graders often are shy when it comes to asking a teacher for help. Your note
will help me to help them.

Time spent on homework should not exceed one hour. If it does, or if your
child is experiencing difficulties with homework, please do not hesitate to
contact me.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated help to make this year a
successful year for your child!
