Computer Lab


Mission For The Class

Kindergarten Technology Units


Kindergarten classes come to the Computer Lab every other week during the
school year. The classes  
focus on computer basics including:

  - Parts of the computer
  - Desktop terminology: Dock, icons, mouse pointer
  - Proper use of the mouse: Clicking, double-clicking, and dragging
  - Basic operating system skills: Opening and closing a program, opening and
closing windows, 
     scrolling, moving windows
  - Graphics: Creating pictures using tools such as pencil, crayon, and paintbrush
To accomplish these objectives, several software programs are used including
Bailey's Book House, 
Thinking Things Collection I, and Kid Pix.



Grade 1 Technology Units


Computer Basics: 
  - Parts of the computer, terminology, usage of components (i.e. the mouse,
printer)
  - Graphics: Using the computer for drawing, painting, stamping, etc. for
many purposes including 
     illustrating stories, creating books and decorations.
  - Keyboarding: Basics of finger positioning, home row, special keys (i.e.
return, delete, shift)
  - Word Processing: Keying in words and/or sentences, basic formatting
  - Operating System basics: Saving files, working with folders
  - Digital Cameras: Using digital photos for projects.
  - Internet: Using the Internet to searching for information, viewing child-
friendly websites, Internet 
     Safety.
To accomplish these objectives, we use several software applications, some of
which include 
Sammy's Science House, Kid Pix, MS Word, and Safari.

Grades 2 and 3 Technology Integration

Second and third grade students come to the computer lab on a flexible basis.
This means that there 
may be weeks in which a class visits the computer lab several times to work on
a project.

Second and third grade classes integrate technology into their other
curriculum areas. Some 
examples include:

  - Drawing and labeling a diagram of an insect using Kid Pix
  - Creating a Venn Diagram using Kidspiration
  - Going on a virtual field trip to a historic site using the Internet
  - Practicing multiplication facts using an interactive web site
  - Developing a character web using Kidspiration
  - Creating a slide show containing photographs of a science experiment
  - Creating a multimedia presentation including graphics, sound, and video.
  - Using an Excel spreadsheet to enter and graph data
  - Publishing a poem using MS Word
  - Using graphing software to create and compare various types of graphs of
collected data
