When are report cards distributed?
First graders district-wide receive report cards only twice a year. Your
child will receive a report card at the end of the second and fourth marking
periods.
--------------------------------------
Does my child get homework every night?
Yes.
Every first grader is expected to read for 10 minutes every night. This is
ALWAYS their homework. The books are to be recorded on the Reading Record
sent home each Monday. The Reading Record is to be returned every Friday.
(Can't find the Reading Record? Click on the HELPFUL HANDOUTS page to print
one out!)
Some nights, they will be expected to complete an
assignment as well as read. Even if your child comes home with no written
assignment, please be advised that your child is still expected to read for
10 minutes that night.
On Fridays, the only homework is to read for 10 minutes each day over the
weekend.
--------------------------------------
When is snack and what should I pack?
We have snack every afternoon. Because first grade has the earliest lunch
period, our afternoon is longer than our morning, so snack is in the
afternoon.
The teachers do not provide snack, so it is up to the parent to provide
their child with a snack each day. Many parents have found that packing
snack separately from their child's lunch prevents their child
from "accidentally" eating his/her snack during lunchtime and having nothing
left to eat during snack.
***Our classroom is NUT FREE due to severe allergies. Please make sure
that any snack you send into school contains no nuts or traces of nuts.***
--------------------------------------
Do first graders take standardized tests?
No, thankfully first graders do not take standardized tests.
--------------------------------------
Is my child expected to study at home for tests in school?
Not in first grade. (They can't study if they don't know how yet!:-)
Although we do take reviews and assessments, we learn HOW to study in first
grade. Your child is not expected to study for any test at home during first
grade. We will study in school. Children will be aware of tests and
assessments before they are given.
--------------------------------------
Is my child expected to know all the sight words by the end of first grade?
We prefer children to have most, if not all, of the sight words easily read
by the end of first grade. Five of the sight words will appear as our "Word
Journal Words" each week. By the end of the year, we will have studied all
of them.
Click on the HELPFUL HANDOUTS page at the top of the screen, and it will
allow you to print the list of sight words, as well as flashcards to help
you
practice with your child.
--------------------------------------
Is my child high, middle, or low compared to the rest of the class?
Every child moves at his or her own pace! We do not compare children in the
class to one another. They are not ranked. (We save that for high school :-)
--------------------------------------
Can I volunteer in the classroom?
Sure! Parents are welcome to come in on a free day every now and then. Just
send me an email or a note at school before the day you want to come in to
confirm the time. You are welcome to come in and read to the class or just
help out. Parents usually stay about a half hour.
There will be special times throughout the year that we specifically ask for
parent volunteers. This will be for events or projects when extra help is
needed. At these times, notes will be sent home before the date that help is
needed.
--------------------------------------
How can I contact Mrs. Micali?
Email is the best way to reach me, as I can acess it from many places. My
email is lmicali@ebnet.org . There is a link at the top right-hand corner of
the home page of the website. Click it, and it will take you to my email.
I can also be reached by phone at the school 732-613-6850. If I am not
available, please leave me a voicemail, as I check it frequently. The only
time I can not talk is when the children are in the room and I am
teaching! :-)
I can also be reached by sending me a note at school in your child's folder.
If you want me to see the note, this is the best place to put it, as I check
each child's folder every morning.
--------------------------------------
How can I help my child succeed?
Check his/her folder EVERY DAY. Any notes from myself or important notices,
lunch calendars, permission slips, etc. will be on the "notes" side of your
child's folder. Homework will be on the homework side.
Please encourage responsibility in your child by allowing him/her to be
responsible for his/her own backpack, homework, folder, etc. A responsible
child is a successful student!
--------------------------------------
What do I do if my child lost/can't find the Reading Record for the week?
Click on the HELPFUL HANDOUTS page. It allows you to download and print a
Reading Record.
--------------------------------------
What is done with homework?
Completed homework is used for a few things. Sometimes homework is "graded"
and returned. Sometimes it is used during class (like math Home Links) to
discuss and share strategies. Sometimes homework is displayed in school.
