This Week In Room 6The week begins with an assembly with author Dan Gutman!!
Reader's Workshop continues. This week we will begin a new unit - Strong Readers Think and Talk About Characters. We will notice what characters say and do. We will discuss their thoughts and feelings. We will observe changes in a character's feelings. Finally, we will use a Venn diagram to compare various characters.
Our writers are writing, writing, writing in Writer's Workshop. On Monday the students will learn how to address an envelope and send their letters on their way! Students will "show what they know" and complete an On Demand narrative writing about a small moment. We will then begin a new unit in writing - Using Authors as Mentors! We will notice the writer's craft used by Ezra Jack Keats. Then, the students will try to employ those crafts in their writing. This week they will add ellipses, dashes,

Math begins with Mad Minute Monday! This week we will begin Unit 4 - Addition and Subtraction. We will be working with a variety of number stories. The students will use diagrams to help them solve change to more number stories and parts and total number stories. They will also read temperatures on a thermometer and notice temperature changes. We will continue working with money. Students will estimate total costs, find the exact cost and make change! Nightly practice with the basic facts would be beneficial. Students should now write the time on every paper!
In Social Studies this week we will continue with Unit 3 - The Past. We will learn about the history of our country in one chapter. This week we will learn about the Pilgrim's arrival and the hardships they experienced as they established the Plymouth colony.
In Science the students will complete our unit on Balance and Motion! We will begin our new unit - Solids, Liquids and Gases!
In Health the students will continue learning about proper nutrition. We will learn about the food pyramid. Students will work in groups to construct a model of the food pyramid. So you can see, Second Grade is a very busy place to be!
