This Week In Room 6

Congratulations to Room 6 - We reached our first goal! The ice cream party was a great success!

In Reader's Workshop we will be reading about the adventures of Mr. Putter and Tabby in books written by Cynthia Rylant. After reading the stories, the students will be identifying various story elements such as setting, characters, problem and solution, as well as, identifying the main idea.  The students will use the information to practice retelling stories. Running Records will continue!

In our Writer's Workshop our writers will be writing, writing, writing!  This week we will be connecting our Reader's Workshop with Writer's Workshop as we practice writing a retelling.  On Friday the students will listen carefully to a story and then write a detailed retelling.

Our Words Their Way sort will be using the ad,ed, ab, and ob families.  We will continue working as a whole class to establish the routines needed for the rest of the year.

Math begins with Mad Minute Monday!!!  Practice those facts! We will continue working on Unit 2.  The students will continue to look at the facts table and investigate the relationship between addition and subtraction. We will work with fact families and discover equivalent names for various numbers. Nightly practice with basic math facts would be beneficial.

In Social Studies the students will learn about changing communities. The topics that we will discuss are transportation, communication, and community fun. We will identify the types of transportation used to move goods and people. The students will also explore ways that these changes have affected people's lives, in the past and today's world as well. We will also identify the various modes of communication and compare and contrast old and new ways of communicating. The students will then describe the ways that they like to have fun with their families and friends. Also, the students will recognize these changes over time.

In Science the students will learn the importance of recording experiments.  They will also observe demonstrations of interacting objects and identify specific interactions. The students will also find and record the evidence of interaction as they examine pictures in the Student Journal.

In Health we will continue with our essential character education lessons.  We will continue to differentiate tattling and telling.  The students will complete their respect books. We will attend a Fire Prevention Assembly!

So you can see, Second Grade is a very busy place to be!
