What is SEPTA?
SEPTA is a group of parents interested in gaining and providing information to help their families and others through informational meetings. Our organization works closely with the school district to identify the needs of the community. We are an “extension of each school’s PTA”, working to volunteer together toward an inclusive environment for our children. Our goal is for general and special education students to assimilate in the district. To date, secondary level schools have provided structured after school social programs to help all students develop friendships. SEPTA is continually motivated to add additional resources for special needs children and young adults with all levels of ability. Currently, programs developed through community programs consist of inclusion yoga, techno art and an inclusion summer program. Additionally, SEPTA runs a free social group for teens with special needs that coincides with SEPTA meetings and provides childcare so that parents can listen quietly to the facilitators at meetings. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to interact, develop friendships and practice social skills in a comfortable environment. SEPTA has become a resource to parents, through networking information such as after school and at home childcare supports and professionals. SEPTA members have children with a wide spectrum of disabilities ranging from autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD, down syndrome, learning disabilities, communicative impaired and more. Each child is unique in that the severity of each disability is broad, ranging from mild, moderate to severe. Physical needs differ from ambulatory, non-ambulatory and assistive devices. Learning disabilities range requiring various modifications. SEPTA includes all families of all levels who are interested in learning more to help our children. We do not accommodate to, nor discriminate towards any one type of disability or level of severity or lack of. We are a support to anyone who needs it and have developed wonderful friendships and comrade among parents and children alike. SEPTA’s ultimate goal is to have parents and children assimilate in an inclusive social and educational district and unite in the diverse community that we live in.
At the holiday season, help us live our dream toward making a stronger community for our children.
“Every child is born with wings....
It is with the help of special people
That the all learn to soar”....
