I was born on the island of Jamaica and I immigrated to the United States at
the age of nine. I spent most of my years living in the city of
Newark, NJ and I attended high school in South Orange, NJ. Upon graduating
in 1999 from the University of Rochester, I earned my BA in History
as well as a teaching certification in secondary Social Studies in the state
of New York. I moved back to NJ after graduation and continued to
pursue professional enrichment and development in the field of education.
I obtained my certification to teach secondary Social Studies in NJ in
2001 and earned a Masters degree in Education at Seton Hall University in
2003.
I taught middle school students for three years from 2000-2003 at
St. Anthony R.C. School in Paterson, NJ. I currently teach World History and
U.S. History to sixth and eighth graders at Greater Newark Charter School
(GNCS) in Newark, NJ. I am dedicated to the idea that as a teacher
I am responsible for encouraging and preparing students to become
emotionally stable, intellectually stimulated and morally strong
individuals. As such I have continued my professional development by
participating for the past two years in the Discovery History Fellowship
which is sponsored by the American Institute for History. I also serve in
various capacities at GNCS. I am the newspaper editor as well as the
yearbook coordinator. All of these things and my desire to see my students
excel keep me motivated and excited about my career in education.
We will effectively participate in achieving the goals of GNCS and
learn from the wealth of knowledge, culture and experience that is available
here. Together, we can reach the unreachable, believe the inconceivable and
realize our wildest imaginations!
