Weekly Spelling Assignments
Each full week of school students will be working on developing spelling proficiency of words they commonly misspell or are working on incorporating into their written and spoken language. Each student creates a unique individual spelling list to be study during the week.
During class on Monday of each full week students search for words in their work that have been identified as misspelled and add them to their individual list of words to learn. Students may also add words from the class Word Wall that they would like to be proficient at spelling as they use these new words in their writing. Additionally, as students find words in their reading that they find interesting or strong words they may add to their words to learn section of their Writer’s Notebooks. The objective of locating individual words is to find words that students will use in their writing, speaking, and find while reading. Words that are too scientific or obscure will not be accepted as weekly words. Students collaborate with another student to check the spelling of each chosen word and double check that the word is correctly spelled on their study sheets.
Friday’s Spelling Test includes not only spelling the ten words correctly but using each word correctly in a sentence. A spelling grade as well as a vocabulary grade is given for each part of the test. Words that are not spelled correctly are placed on the next weeks spelling list until students are able to correctly spell the word.
