6th Grade ILA Homework I try to keep homework consistent each week. From time to time homework specific to an area of study maybe added to the weekly homework, please check student agenda’s as well as this web site for updates on a weekly basis.
Monday Night’s Homework: ü Read 30 minutes each night and record in notebook. ü 8/9 class- Games are due completed on Thursday ü Scholastic book orders due on Friday ü Divide the first five words of spelling list into syllables ü Reading Response #2- MP 4- due Monday May 19th. ð You should almost be done your literature circle books. Take some time to go back through the book. Pick out a scene that you feel was important to the plot of the book. In the first paragraph summarize the scene in 8 to 10 sentences. Then write a paragraph that explains why you felt this was an important scene to the overall plot of the book. Some questions to consider are; how did this scene change the characters outlook on their situation? How would the book be different if this scene did not occur? What made this scene exciting, sad, or meaningful? How did this scene affect the other characters in the book? If you were the author what would you have changed about this scene and why? Please do not answer questions directly but use them to think about and develop your response. Include a quote from the scene and of course a topic sentence and conclusion.
Tuesday Night’s Homework: ü Read 30 minutes each night and record in notebook. ü Scholastic book orders due on Friday ü Divide the second five words of spelling list into syllables ü Use a thesaurus or an online thesaurus to find a synonym for the following word. Cavort Use an index card and write the word cavort and your new word on one side. On the opposite side, write the definition of the new word and use both words in sentences that clearly show the words meaning. ü Writing Prompt #3- MP 4- Due Monday May 19th. Use the poems we discussed in class today as a starting point. Think about what would be in your imaginary journal. This is a great technique for you to try as a poet. Take a verbal snapshot of who you are right now and write a poem about it. Wednesday Night’s Homework: ü Read lit circle assignment- create three questions for discussion. ü 8/9 class- Games due tomorrow. ü Write sentences that show meaning for first five spelling words. ü Scholastic book orders due on Friday Spelling sentences. 10 sentences due on Friday.
Thursday Night’s Homework: ü Read 30 minutes each night and record in notebook. ü Scholastic book orders due on Friday ü Write sentences for the second five words of spelling- all words due Friday. ü Writing Prompt #4, MP 4: Due Monday May 19th. Today’s poem is they type you could put on your bulletin board or your bedroom wall; I think the last stanza at least is one to memorize. Poetry is useful. It can help us live our lives. This poem will remind you not to forget what matters, what last, what you can do to matter. Pick one of the following and write your own poetic version of what you believe fame is, wealth is, happiness is, success is... ü Study for Spelling test. Sentences due tomorrow.
Friday Night’s Homework: ü Read 30 minutes each night and record in notebook. ü Pen Pal picnic is on Monday- Bring to school a towel or small blanket to sit on. We will still have class so be prepared.

Marking Period Two Writing Prompts to date ü Writing prompt #1- Week of November 19-21 o What would you like to be different about our ILA class? Write a letter to me trying to persuade me to include your suggestions or change the way we do things now. Be sure to include at least two types of persuasion discussed in class today. ( Facts, heartstrings, what others do, anticipate my response) ü Writing Prompt # 2- Week of November 26- 30. Please have done by Sunday. o The crystal blue water glistened in front of us as we navigated the sailboat to the snorkeling reef. Below us, we could see colorful fish swimming around the boat. The water was so clear you could see the bottom of the sea. We first realized we were in trouble as we were leaning over the side of the boat looking at the clown fish. It couldn’t be. What were we going to do. (Use dialogue, similes and metaphors, as well as some of your vocabulary words to create your own story based on this prompt.) ü Writing Prompt # 3- Assigned Week of December 3- 7. Please have done by Sunday. o The wise owl perched high in the bare leafless tree watched as the snow drifted slowly to the ground below. It was the first snow of the season and a sign of a long cold winter. Oblivious that anyone was watching the owl continued to scan the field for a small rodent to savor for lunch. Not far way danger was watching the wise owl planning for the right moment. In his head, he already knew what he would do once he captured the great wise owl. ü Writing Prompt # 4- Assigned Week of December 10- 14. Please have done by Sunday. o It’s the holidays and a mother has insisted that her year old child come with her to run errands in the local shopping mall. The child reluctantly goes with the mom but does not understand why he/she can not stay at home and watch TV. Write a story about what happens in the mall when the child gets lost. Include lots of details in your writing, sensory details. Include dialogue and use figurative language such as similes and metaphors to create a visual scene for your readers. Don’t forget to include character traits of both the mom and the child. ü Writing Prompt # 5- Assigned week of December 17- 21. Please have done by Sunday. o Using sensory details we discussed last week- describe the best present you ever received by describing in detail what the moment felt like, what emotions you felt, what it looked like, what is smelled or tasted like. Try to incorporate as many senses as possible- taste, sight, sound, touch, smell and emotions. As you describe the best present ever use dialogue to create a scene from your life similar to the one in the story Eleven we read together last week. Use similes and metaphors to bring your thoughts to life through comparisons.
ü Writing Prompt # 6- Assigned week of January 7-11. Please have done by Sunday January 13. o You wake up to find a huge storm blanketed
Alfred has lost his key ring, on which he keeps the keys to everything he owns. How does this affect his day? What does he do to recover his keys? Write about Alfred and his missing keys. You can change the name and gender of the main character, if you like. Be sure to use a creative beginning that hooks the reader’s attention. Use dialogue to keep the action moving and don’t forget to use sensory details and figurative language like similes and metaphors.
Writing Prompt # 8- please have done by Sunday February 3rd.. ð An elevator got stuck on the 37th floor of a skyscraper. One or more people were stuck in the elevator. Write a short story about what happened. You must include dialogue, make comparisons by using similes and metaphors, and capture the small moments by expanding your details.
