Study Skills

Being a good student can help you achieve your goals. There are many simple
things you can do to be successful in school.

1. It is important to attend school every day and to arrive on time. By
being part of class discussions from the start, you can hear all directions
given. Of course, if you are sick, you should stay home. But make sure your
parent or guardian calls the school for you so your absence is recorded.
When you return to school, have them write a note so your absence will be
excused. Check the teachers' websites so you can keep up with the work while
you are home. When you return to school, ask your teacher about assignments
you missed.

2. Listen to your teacher when he or she is presenting information and giving
you assignments. Teachers know you are listening to them when you are
sitting in your seat, facing them, with your eyes forward. Paying attention
to instructions will make it much easier to do the work assigned.

3. If you don't understand something, ask your teacher to explain it. Don't
be shy or feel as if your question is silly. There are many different ways
to explain something. Don't wait until the day before a test or the day
before a report is due. Ask as soon as you are not sure about something.

4. Having late assignments pile up in front of you can be scary and
stressful. Talk to your teachers if you fall behind on your homework. Ask
them to help you make a plan for catching up. Show responsibility by staying
after school to get back on track. You will feel so much better about
yourself and school when you have everything done!!

5. Talk it out!! If someone or something is bothering you or if you are
worried about something, talk to your parents or guardian. There are also
many people at school you could talk to about probelms that seem too big to
handle. Ask to speak to a favorite teacher, or ask to speak with your School
Counselor or Student Assistance Specialist.
