Independent Reading

Independent reading is a major part of the ILA program. Therefore, it is REQUIRED that all students have an independent reading book with them at all times. This book should be with students in school and taken home every night.

Students may choose their own independent reading book based on their interests and reading level. Independent reading books are read for pleasure and for information. It is important that students choose books that they WANT to read; this is an excellent opportunity for students to have freedom and choice in their own learning.

Any student or parent who is interested can ask for their child's Lexile Number by the third week of school. Students, parents, and teachers can work together to find books suitable for each child using this score as an indicator. Visit www.lexile.com to search for appropriate books for your child.
