Get Involved

We don’t know what you’ve heard, but the Hammarskjold PTA is a very busy
organization in need of lots of volunteers. If you enjoyed spending time at
your child’s elementary school and thought that your days of helping out were
done, you’re wrong!! Your involvement in school activities is very important
to the success of your child's school experience. By volunteering a little
time during the year (not necessarily during the school day!), you can check
out what's going on while providing valuable and much appreciated assistance.

Please complete the volunteer form available on the download forms page and
return it to school.

The Hammarskjold PTA was very busy last school year and we gave you many
opportunities to help out at the school. Here are just some of the PTA
sponsored events during the 2008-2009 school year and that we will offer
again this year (2009-2010):

	* Picture Day – Formal school photos are taken in the fall and
informal photos are taken in the spring. Parents keep things moving along and
the kids enjoy seeing the volunteers at school.

	* School Store – The store is open every Tuesday and Thursday and
parents are behind the counters every week to run the facility. The more
volunteers, the easier the shopping is for the kids and the better the
rotation of volunteers. Volunteer on your own schedule as often as you like.

	* Book Fair – This is another event that takes place twice a year. It
is held in the Media Center with parent volunteers monitoring the book fair
and keeping the shelves restocked. Each time, it is a week-long event with
shifts each day from the beginning to the end of the school day. All classes
participate and the kids love seeing parents they know at this event.

	* TGIF – This is a major evening event held twice during the school
year. The fall TGIF (Nov. 20) is for 7th graders only and this year, the
spring event (May 21) will be for 6th & 7th graders combined. The event
consists of a dance, games, inflatables and food concessions for the kids to
enjoy. This event requires MANY parents (and staff members, too!) to
chaperone and is a fun evening for kids and adults alike!

	* Baked Goods for Valentine's Day and Teachers’ Appreciation Day–
Parents volunteer to bake or purchase baked goods for a special snack for the
staff to let them know that we love them!!

	* The Winter Event – this past year we held two special evening
functions just to give the kids something fun to do on a Friday Night: Movie
Night and Sports Night. This year we will hold an Ice Cream Social on October
23rd and a mid-winter blues event on February 5th. Parent volunteers helped
with food distribution and maintaining a fun atmosphere for the kids!
