The tale of the seventh grader...

'How do you study for math?' asked the seventh grader.
Let me tell you...
Get your text (which should be at home for PreAlg).
Turn to the Chapter you are studying. For example, Chap 1.
Read the vocabulary and examples for each section.
Do some of the odd numbered problems. (Even if you think you already know
how to do it, or you did it for hw, or in class. Do it again!)
Write out the problems, show the work!
The odd numbered answers are in the back of the book. Check to see if you
are correct.
Then,
turn to the back of the book, page 797(Alg) page 803 (PreAlg)- it's called
extra practice - broken down by Chapter.
Write down those problems, show the work, and again odd numbered answers
    in the back.
PreAlg - you have practice in your workbooks you can do.

The more you practice - actually doing the problems and showing the work -
the better you will be in math.
And hopefully less 'silly' or 'careless' mistakes.
Be prepared! - pencil, calculator, notebook/binder(with paper),
and for PreAlg packet and workbook.
