Welcome to the HOT and exciting month of June!!! As we push forward to the
end of the fifth grade year there is plenty of learning left, and plenty
of work to be done. This week we will be kicking off global education
week as we dig deep into both ancient and modern China! Also, our
language arts unit on adverbs will be in full swing. In mathematics,
we will be completing the ratios unit on Tuesday and sliding right into
percents. The month of June also holds plenty of fun activities for the
fifth graders, including the fun fair, our yearly play (Seussical the
Musical), and the fifth grade class picnic at the rec fields. See you
all there!
It is time yet again to show your skills and abilities on the New Jersey ASK!
I am looking forward to seeing everyone this week to take this test and show
everyone just how much we've learned in the fifth grade. Remember to get
plenty of rest and relaxation on test nights and eat well. (including a
breakfast!)
Welcome back to school boys and girls! I hope everyone had a wonderful, fun,
and relaxing spring break. The next four weeks of school will prove to be
some of the toughest weeks during the fifth grade year in preparation for
the NJASK scheduled for the week of May 6th. I know you are all up to the
challenge!!!
Also, please remember that all of that hard work that we do doesn't come
without it's reward. The end of the fifth grade school year holds many
fun and exciting activities and events that we will be working towards.
Keep focused, but also remember that, while these few weeks may be
difficult, there is plenty of fun learning experiences left in our
wonderful fifth grade year!
March will be another month of fun and learning here in fifth grade. To celebrate Women's
History Month, students will read biographies about women of distinction in history and the
present. We will culminate that activity by creating our "Hall of Stars" in March. Likewise,
students will perform a "Living Wax Museum" for our second graders on Wednesday, March 20. Students will come to school prepared to give a talk from the perspective of a famous person they have read about. Math will be focused on algebra and solving algebraic expressions as related to
real-world problems. In social studies, students are learning about the causes and effects of the Revolutionary War. March will be an exciting month! Don't forget that the Oakland Police
Department will take our students to the Barnum and Bailey Circus on Thursday, March 7th.
Hopefully, spring will arrive very shortly!
Happy MLK Day!!!
With the end of the marking period on Thursday please make sure that all reading responses are
completed and page logs are in! As we push forward into the second half of the school year
remember that expectations are increasing and all the hard work that we have put in so far is
important to finishing the fifth grade year with excellence!!!! Keep up the hard work and do your best.

Parents - FYI:
In fifth grade we continue the independent reading assignments that the
students experienced in fourth grade. Your fifth grader will be required to
read each night for homework, and parents are asked to support us by signing
off on reading records. Students will be carrying their free-reading
books home each night, so we ask that you purchase a sturdy plastic carrier
for this purpose. Globe-Weis makes different types of sturdy file folders and
they are available at Staples. A sturdy ziplock bag will suffice if you
cannot get a file folder
Reminder:
Each night your child needs two signatures from you for homework. Please sign
the daily agenda as an
indicator to me that all homework has been completed and packed for school.
Reading homework
each night is simply to read for pleasure for 20 minutes, record the amount of
pages read on the
Reading Record. Please initial the Reading Record after your child completes
this task.
In the morning, each child who has completed all homework and has two parent
signatures receives a
sticker. Accumulated stickers lead to great PRIZES for your children!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND COOPERATION!!
Hello boys and girls and welcome to the very exciting 5th grade year!
I am looking forward to meeting you all on September 5th for our first day of school together. I hope everyone had a fun and refreshing summer, and you're all ready to celebrate the beginning of a new year of school. The 5th grade is a great opportunity to gain a little more independence and responsibility in school before graduating to Valley Middle School. We will be working on building strong organizational skills over the course of this school year. These are skills that will be very important for the rest of your lives. Another exciting change that we will experience this year is changing classes in the afternoon. This is a change that will also prepare you for middle school, but a change that I'm sure you will all enjoy.
On September 5th it is important for all fifth grade students to be prepared for the new school year. This means that all of the required classroom materials that can be found on the supply list on the schools web page must be brought to school. Each student must also have a small picture of themselves doing an activity that they took part in over the summer. I can't wait to see how much fun everyone had over the past few months! Finally, each student must have all of their summer reading completed, and come in with a bag to keep their SSR book and papers in.
Throughout the year this website will be an easy way to communicate between school and home. It is important for both the 5th grade students and the parents to check it often. I will be updating the homework section every day, and most, if not all, important documents and information will be included as well. Please take the time to look through the entire page occasionally to make sure you don't miss any of the "good stuff" that I will be posting.
With that being said, I am looking forward to a terrific 5th grade year from each and every one of you! Take the time this week to enjoy the last week before school, but I hope everyone begins to look forward to school next week with all of our friends and teachers.
