Introduction
Dear Visitor,
Welcome
to
The 6th grade cycle is thirty days long and includes hand sewing skills, child care with an emphasis on babysitting, and a brief foods and nutrition unit with an emphasis on nutritious snacks.
The 7th grade cycle, which is now one marking period, covers hand and machine sewing skills and clothing management. However, due to overcrowding at our school, the sewing room has been converted into a 4th grade classroom. The sewing machines have been set up in the foods room, which is now a multi-purpose room. The 7th grade students will make a square pillow with a hand sewn opening, and they will sew both a sew-through and a shank button. Label reading, clothing care, and a "stain-buster" lesson will complete the cycle.
The 8th grade program is a foods and nutrition cycle that is a trimester (60 days) in length. The students cover kitchen safety and sanitation, recipe reading, measurements and abbreviations. In addition, nutritious breakfasts, and main meals are emphasized. Students make quick breads and yeast breads, they learn to cook a variety of different grains from different cultures, and they learn about good nutrition by selecting healthy recipes or making changes to create healthy recipes. There is also a unit on vegetables where students make delicious recipes for appetizers, side dishes, main meals and even vegetable desserts.
The Stitching and Stirring club is no longer active due to funding cuts to New Jersey Schools. The recipes are available to download and last year's activities are still posted.
We use project based learning whenever possible, differentiated learning to meet our students' needs, and we employ technology when appropriate. I hope you visit again! |
