                                    Budget Vote Information

Every April there is a vote on the annual budget for the entire East
Brunswick School system. This is the only budget on which registered voters
of the town is allowed to vote. And, pass or fail, the vote is always
close. Last year the school budget passed by the slimmest of margins – 43
votes – and the year before that it failed by a similarly close call. This
year there has been a lot of press on looming budget problems for the state
and town. Consequently, passing the school budget this year will be
especially hard which is why we are asking for your help now.

So here is how you can help:

•Register to Vote: If you are not already registered to vote, or if you
recently changed address or name, fill out a voter registration form. In
order to vote the Board of Education elections on April 15th, 2008, you must
be registered by March 25th, 2008. Voter registration forms on line at
http://www.nj.gov/lps/elections/vote_doe.html or ebnet.org, or at the East
Brunswick Public Library.

•Educate Yourselves: Visit the East Brunswick Board of Education website
(www.ebnet.org) and the Garden State Coalition of Schools
(www.gscschools.org) to learn about this year’s budget, the costs of running
our school system and important meeting dates. Consider attending Board of
Education meetings or watch them on Comcast, channel 3. Feel free to reach
out and ask questions – there are links on the websites.

•Exercise Your Right to Vote: Ballot day is April 15th, but you can also
vote in advance through an absentee ballot if you anticipate not being able
to make it to the polls (polling hours for Board of Education elections are
from 2pm to 9pm and it is hard for some of us to fit that into our day).
Absentee ballots must be requested in advance and received by the election
office by April 18th. To get an absentee ballot, go to
www.nj.gov.us/lps/elections/absentee_doe.html.

No one enjoys paying more taxes, but we believe we have a
responsibility to support our children and our school system. While the
state considers ways to remedy the burden of our property taxes (through
increased rebates that are anticipated this year) and supplying more money
to local school systems (through a restructured system of allocating state
funds that we hope will result in more money coming from the state this
year), the annual needs of the school budget must be met. This can only be
done when the budget passes. When the budget fails, the town council feels
compelled to cut the school budget resulting in direct and real losses for
our children at school. And unfortunately, despite concerted efforts on the
part of the Board of Education to contain costs, as long as basics such as
fuel (for busing and heating) continue to rise, so must the budget in order
to meet these costs.
Please take the time to educate yourselves, ask questions, register
to vote and exercise your right to vote on April. Thank you very much for
your time and attention to this important information.

*****************************************************************************

Our PTA is an active organization providing services that enhance our
children's educational and recreational experiences and strives to give
parents a more direct voice in what happens in our school.

The success of our PTA is dependant upon people who are enthusiastic about
volunteering at our school. We have many committees that are active at
different times of the year and require various levels of commitment.

What ever your level of flexibility, please join us. By working together, we
can make Irwin School a great place for our children!
