Word Study

Word Study (based on Words Their Way)

Students have been assessed on their spelling strengths and weaknesses and placed in cooperative 
learning groups. Lists have been developed to focus on specific spelling patterns. NOT ALL STUDENTS 
WILL RECEIVE THE SAME LIST

Students will work during the week to identify the patterns their words follow and sort their words by 
pattern.  Students will work each week to master various spelling skills and strategies.

Weekly routines (completed in school) are as follows: 

Monday-Students will be introduced to their new sort for the week. Students 
are taught either the pattern, sound, or meaning that their sort has in 
common.

Tuesday: Students will work independently to practice manipulating and 
sorting their words for the week. 

Wednesday: Students will review sorts again by completing a partner or blind 
sort. 

Thursday: Assessments are given on 15 of the weekly words.
