How long will my child remain in the ESL program?
Students usually benefit from ESL instruction from 1 to 5 years, depending on
their previous school experience. Children learn English at different rates!
When will my child EXIT the ESL program?
Students exit the ESL program when they are proficient enough in English to
succeed in their regular classrooms. A test is given in December (as needed)
and May. Students who pass the test may exit the ESL program if they are
completing their classroom work and homework assignments and reading and
writing on or near grade level.
How often does my child go to ESL class?
Intermediate and Advanced ESL students attend ESL class for 40 minutes each
day. Beginner students attend 2 periods (80 minutes) of ESL a day when
possible.
Can I help my child learn English?
Yes! You can help your child learn English by practicing the vocabulary
words that I send home. You can also help by READING with your child in
English and asking him or her questions about the books.
