What's Happening in Class?

This week, we will be covering these topics in class...

Reading Workshop We begin our second unit of study "Making Connections." This week, students will learn about what connections are, how to make them when reading, and why it is important to reflect on personal experiences when reading. It also allows students to connect various books to each other by author, story plot, characters and feelings. Students will use post it notes to record connections in their books. The three connections we will be teaching are: Self to Test (ST), Text to Text (TT), and Text to World (TW).

Writing Workshop We are finishing our first unit, "Small Moments." Students will be focusing on creating a strong topic sentence as well as sentences that support the main idea. Brainstorming, grammar, sentence structure and puncutation will be the main focus for the beginning writing activities. Students will confer with the teacher during their independent writing time when appropriate. Reviewing behaviors during conferring sessions and independent writing time will take place. Published stories will go home on Friday.

Word Study (Spelling) Students will be working through beginning word sorts to identify sounds and blends. Students will create words by cutting letters out of old newpapers and magazines. Completed words will be used on the Smartboard.

Math - Chapter 3 beings with a review of place value, using coins to buy things, and telling time. We will also be collecting data, having two rules for frmaes and arrows and making change by counting up. .

Science Students will become astronauts when we study space. Topics include planets, the solar system, stars, the sky etc.

Social Studies Students will learn about Veterans Day and why we celebrate it.
