December 2009 Fifth graders have concluded their first Performance Circle, in which they performed a song of their choice for classmates. I heard and observed a multitude of important strings skills demonstrated in these performances. You should have received your child's first marking period report card along with the performance assessment sheet, which I would appreciate your signing. Now we are underway with winter concert preparation. It would be helpful for you to remind your child to maintain a regular practice schedule, rotating the four concert songs through their week of practice. Fourth graders are eagerly learning how to read notes on the music staff, develop the proper bowgrip, and manage the bow for a strong, clear sound. As we learn how to finger notes on the D & A strings, you will start to recognize familiar childhood tunes. Our first performances will be in late February to early March, when we entertain the first and second grade classes. (Report cards for beginners are issued at the end of the second marking period.) Thank you for continuing to sign your child's practice record each week. You will be receiving a letter of invitation for your child to join our district orchestra program, in which we rehearse 3:45-4:45 for 10 weeks to prepare for a fabulous concert. Intermediate orchestra will meet on Mondays starting on February 8; beginner orchestra rehearses on Tuesdays starting on February 16. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to experience the reward of learning the string instrument and meeting other strings students from all eight elementary schools in the district. Please feel free to reach me at lgoldstein@ebnet.org, 732-613-6900 x4055, or via this website. I am always happy to take the time to discuss your child's progress or answer any questions you might have about the strings program. Best wishes for a happy holiday season, Mrs. Goldstein
