Social Studies 1

Week of December 21-23

Due Thursday December 17- Child Labor Journal Entry This was collected-
Several students have not handed their journal entry in.

Students printed out a photograph taken by Lewis Hines 1908-1912 of children
working in mills, mines, factories, as newsies...

Write a journal entry as if you were the child in the pictre. (I point of
view)

A requirement sheet and rubric was given out. Refer to it.

Use the Internet for help with information about children working.
Use historyplace.com Click on Child Labor in America. Read the captions
under Lewis Hine's pictures for brief information.

There are two interesting stories from the time period that supply
information about working in mills or mines.
To find them Google- The story of my cotton dress (for mills)
                     Mr Coals story (for mines)

Journal entry should be typed (double spaced) or written neatly on good copy
paper-no holes.

This week we are watching the video Newsies to learn about child labor 1899,
growth of cities, and labor union movement.
