Second grade has been such a blast! In math, the children have been working
very hard on multiplication tables of 2, 5, and 10 using skip-counting and dot
paper strategies. They also learned to relate multiplication to division.
Second graders have also written their own real life stories to relate to
multiplication and division.
In language arts, we have been working on adding details to sentences to make
them more interesting! We have been discussing many adjectives and how they
can improve a sentence and its meaning. For example: Instead of writing, ”I
had a fun day.” We can write, “My day was filled with so much excitement from
playing on the jungle gym!” The children get excited about adding new
vocabulary words to their list! As Read Across Oakland came upon us, we began
our morning with D.E.A.R. time and then had Mr. Silverstein as our guest
reader! He read Cat in The Hat to all of the second graders. It was a
rewarding experience for all! We will have another guest reader in the middle
of March! We will keep this special reader a mystery!!!
Moving forward, please continue to read at home every night. Ask your child
how their supply boxes are doing with supplies. Most of the children are in
need of new crayons. Happy March! We can’t wait for spring to arrive!
