PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE NEW IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR CHILDREN BORN AFTER 
JANUARY 1, 1997 AND ENTERING 6TH GRADE IN SEPTEMBER 2008: STUDENTS WILL NEED 
Tdap (Tetanus, diptheria, acellular pertussis)and Meninggococcal vaccines. 
There is also a new requirement for toddlers in preschool programs who will 
need a Flu shot. Please check the main East Brunswick website ebnet.org for 
more information.
These vaccines are available through the Middlesex County Children's 
Immunization Program of the Health Department, AT NO CHARGE, if you have NO 
INSURANCE OR IF YOUR INSURANCE DOES NOT COVER THE COST OF IMMUNIZATIONS; YOU 
MUST ALSO BE A RESIDENT OF MIDDLESEX COUNTY.  Call 732-745-3125 for 
additional information and requirements.

100 AND FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS ARE REQUIRED TO STAY HOME. STUDENTS MAY RETURN TO 
SCHOOL WHEN THEIR TEMP IS NORMAL FOR 24HR. WITHOUT FEVER REDUCING MEDICATION 
LIKE TYLENOL OR ADVIL. Scenario: fever Monday, stay home Monday. Tuesday: 
check temp: if normal and no meds given, again stay home, return  Wednesday. 
However, if temp Tuesday: stay home Tuesday; Wednesday, check temp: if normal 
and no meds given, stay home and return on Thursday, etc. IF YOU HAVE ANY 
QUESTIONS, CALL THE HEALTH OFFICE.

1.  New students need a copy of ALL IMMUNIZATIONS records and proof of a 
health exam by a physician with 365 days of entering Memorial School.If 
needed, new students have 30 days to get a physical.

2.  Students diagnosed with STREP,Pink Eye(conjunctivitis), Impetigo, etc. 
need to present 
a doctor's note to the Health Office upon return to school, 24hrs. after 
treatment is begun.In addition, children with splints, casts, ace 
bandages,slings or crutches need a doctor's note which indicates whether or 
not they can participate in gym or recess and when they can return to full 
activity at school.

3.  If your student has a medical exam during the year (well check-up, 
vision, hearing,etc.)please forward a copy of the exam to the Health Office 
in order to update the health records.

4.  It is medically advisable to have a child with an elevated temperature, 
vomiting or diarrhea remain at home until symptoms are gone for 24 hours.

5.  ON THE CALENDAR PAGE, Childrens Health Conference (732-745-3125) and 
Women's prgrams (732-745-3127) are administered by the DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH 
FOR MIDDLESEX COUNTY. In addition, there is a Childrens Immunization Program 
for children with NO or UNDER insurance coverage. Children must come with a 
parent or guardian and bring a copy of their shot record and a note from the 
school nurse, indicating what shots are needed.(732-745-3128/732-745-4626). 
The Health Department provides many other services and screenings.

4.  FOODS THAT ARE CONSIDERED BY USDA REGULATION AND NEW JERSEY STATE 
ADMINISTRATIVE CODE AS "FOODS OF MINIMAL NUTRITIONAL VALUE" CANNOT BE SOLD OR 
GIVEN AWAY ON SCHOOL PROPERTY AT ANY TIME DURING THE ACADEMIC DAY.

REGARDING BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 8,2009:
The East Brunswick School District has adopted guidelines for the types of 
foods that may be given out during the school day. Many of the types of foods 
that were once considered a "treat" at school are now prohibited from being 
sent in and handed out to students. Also, SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES prohibit us 
from handing out certain food items.
In light of these new guidelines and practices, we would like to offer 
parents another option. If you would like to send something with your child 
fo hand out to his/her classmates, stickers, pencils, small erasers and or 
bookmarks maybe brought to school. You child may pass these out to friends to 
use throughout the year.
If you are interested in donating a book in your child's name in honor of 
their birthday, inform your child's homeroom teacher.
If you would like to have a class birthday celebration for your child, please 
make arrangements with the teacher IN ADVANCE. These celebrations are short 
and may include one of the above mentioned birthday treats or something 
edible, small and healthy. In the past, small bags of chips, pretzels, 100 
calorie snacks, raisins, fruit have been well received. THE SCHOOL NURSE 
SHOULD BE CONTACTED IN ADVANCE REGARDING FOOD ALLERGIES IN THE CLASSROOM. 
Please do not send in goodie bags or decorations. Treats may also be 
purchased through Child Nutrition732-613-6738.
Invitations for private parties may not be distributed in school. Please use 
the school directory, compiled by the PTA in order to send invitations via 
the US Mail system.

5.  ALL medications to be administered in school, including over the counter 
meds like tylenol, advil, benadryl, eye drops, cough preparations, etc. 
must have a doctor's order. Please call the Health Office for a blank 
Doctor/Parent Permission form or for any questions.Please don't send any 
medication in a child's bookbag. Meds should be hand delivered to the nurse.
All medication orders are good for ONE school year only and MUST be renewed 
each September. Parents will be notified in June to pick up meds by the last 
day of school.In addition, students with asthma, severe allergies and 
diabetes, need to have Action Plans updated by a physician each year.

6. All county schools will be receiving an AED (AUTOMATED EXTERNAL 
DEFIBRILLATOR). They are set to arrive in East Brunswick about December 16. 
AEDs will probably be accessible for use in an emergency even after school 
hours. In addition, they may be adapted now for use with children. With such 
a tool available, what a great time to consider CPR and AED training!! Most 
local hospitals offer courses.Think about it - save a life.

7. Seasonal allergies cause alot of discomfort to sensitive students, 
particularly RED, ITCHY, SWOLLEN, WATERY EYES. Please consider their comfort 
during the school day when working with your doctor to treat these symptoms. 
Call the Health Office if you have questions about using medications in 
school. JUST A REMINDER THAT ALL STUDENTS GO OUT FOR RECESS EVERYDAY 
THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR,UNLESS IT IS BITTER COLD, RAINING, SNOWING, ETC.  
PLEASE DRESS THEM APPROPRIATELY FOR THE PARTICULAR SEASON.
Sunglass use is okay with Mrs. Dunn. Don't forget the sunscreen!
