Homework 4th Grade

4th grade ILA homework is slightly different than that of 3rd grade.

Words To Learn Home Work Is Officially Over!!! Keep Reading and Logging Your Nightly Reading.

Check your child's ILA monthly calendar for their individualized "Words to Learn"

Reading Requirements for homework will remain the same- Minimum or 20-30minutes each night which will be recorded on their reading log. They will have the opportunity to respond to their reading in their homework journal every other week(minimally) as opposed to a "summary" as they did in third grade.

Word Work homework will also alter slightly. Students will have new "Words to Learn" each month. Each child will be responsible for learning spelling/meaning of "Target Words" as well as the opportunity to learn spelling/meaniing of "Challenge Words". For each target word that they show they can already spell correctly, they will choose a "challenge word" from the right hand column. The 5 words that your child is responsible for will be circled on his/her monthly calendar. They will then have a weekly "check" with a monthly assessment for all of their words to learn for the month. Providing differentiated instruction will support all learners in the 4th grade! While students will focus on their individual words each week/month they will be exposed to vocabulary which will enhance their writing as well as support their reading. This homework is to be completed in their "Words to Learn" notebook.

***Your child will receive an ILA homework calender monthly however, it is best that they do not complete all activities in one night but instead practice working with each word for a short time each day of the week to help put it deeper in their long-term memory.

Writing homework will either be a "response to reading" or a " Writing Piece" where they can practice writing independently in the genre we are working on at school. "Reading responses" should be written to me in the friendly letter format where "writing pieces" are not. A rubric to help the children accomplish the requirements will be printed on the back of each month’s calendar. When writing, students should always use their best spelling, proper grammar, appropriate indenting and paragraph format. Rubrics will change throughout the year as our students grow. Our goal is to get the students to generate multi-paragraph stories or expository writing that allows their thoughts to shine through!
