MATH TEST - Monday, June 9, 2008.  Test will be on Unit 12.  A study guide 
will be given to the students on June 3, 2008.

Zodiac test - test will be on Tuesday, June 10, 2008.  Students will need to 
match the sign with the myth.





Math Test - Unit 11 -  Friday, May 23, 2008
Study Guides were given out on May 16, 2008

Social Studies - Test will given on Thursday, May 22, 2008.  Test will be on 
Chapter Unit 8.

Please review the myths from the Astronomy Journal.  The students enjoy 
learning about the lives of the gods and goddess from Mt. Olympus!





SCIENCE - Astronomy Journal test (pages 1-27)  Test will be on Tuesday, May 
6, 2008.  

MATH - Unit 10 test - Thursday, May 8, 2008.  Study guides have been 
distributed for review.






Math - Unit 9 test will be given on Wednesday, April 16, 2008.  Use the 
study 
guide for practice problems.

Students will be completing their state research soon.  We will then 
continue 
in the New Jersey Social Studies book with the next chapter.

All Science students will be visiting the StarLab after the spring break.  
We 
will continue to work in the Astronomy Journal also.




ASTRONOMY JOURNALS HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO THE STUDENTS.  WE WILL BE 
WORKING 
IN THEM DAILY!  KEEP LOOKING AT THE STARS.







MARCH 10 -14, 2008   NJASK testing for 4th grade.
Students should get a good night's sleep and a good breakfast.
Each student must have a book to read should they complete the test early.  
Students are prepared and should not stress out over it!
We will celebrate when the testing is over!!!!






FRACTIONS....F R A C T I O N S.....FrAcTiOnS....will our focus in Chapter 7 
in the Math book.  Students will identify fractions, write them as decimals 
or percents and more.
Students will be practicing in "Study Island" as preparations for the state 
wide testing in March.


Social Studies - In our next chapter, students will read about the changes 
and improvements in New Jersey after the American Revolution.

SCIENCE - students will be learning about "relative motion". Their next 
project will be to make a "flip book",  an activity that they all enjoy. 
(They may keep their Environments journal at home)

Math - Unit 5
Students will focus on extending multiplicaton skills. (continue to practice 
the tables)  Students will also practice reading, writing and using large 
numbers, including powers of 10, to represent large numbers.

Social Studies - Chapter 5
We will be learning about New Jersey's role in the American Revolution.

Science - Relative Position and Motion (new student journal)
Students will be introduced to Observer RK.  "RK" will be used as a 
reference object.








F I E L D   T R I P . . . . .
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2007
The 4th graders will be going to the Rutger's Agricultural Museum on Friday, 
December 7, 2007.  This trip will be half day only and we will return to 
school by lunch.  Students will be learning about and experiencing life as a 
Lenape Indian. 

Science test - scheduled for Monday, December 10, 2007.
Students will be using their notes in their science notebooks to study for 
this test.  The test will be about the isopods, beetles and hermit crabs 
that 
we have been studying in class. (Use the 5 questions they researched as 
guidelines) Meanwhile, journal responses will be graded and students have 
been instructed to think before they write their responses.

Math -- students have been learning about decimals.  They know about place 
values, using decimals, and pronouncing the "ths" endings.  They should be 
able to write and read decimals in the tenths, hundredths and thousandths 
place values.  (math test will be coming up soon)




Math test (Unit 3) will be scheduled for Friday, November 16, 2007.  Study 
guides will be sent home on Wednesday, November 7, 2007.  

STAR MAPS will be sent home on Wednesday, November 7, 2007.  Be sure to 
start 
looking at the stars!!


HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!!!!



Unit 2 Math tests will be sent home the week of October 22, 2007.  We have 
begun Unit 3 in Math and it would be helpful to review and practice the 
multiplication tables with your child. Using map scale to measure distances 
will be an important skill that we will also practice in Unit 3.

New Jersey resources and state symbols will be some of the things the 4th 
graders will be studying in chapter 2 in Social Studies. The test won't be 
until after Halloween, probably in the first week of November.

Environmental factors and how they affect plants will be determined in 
science.  Students will be using their Science Journal to record the growth 
of fava beans which were planted on October 19th.







Math test will be on Tuesday, October 16, 2007(Part 1).  Part 2 will be on 
Thursday, October 18, 2007.

SCIENCE - a test will be given on Friday, October 12, 2007.  Students should 
use their science folders to study.  The test will have the terms that we 
have been using in class - organism, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, 
habitat, 
environment,
population, predator, prey, dispersal, food chain, food web.  Students will 
be asked to draw a food chain using organisms found in New Jersey (the test 
will list these organisms.

MATH - Unit 2 will be about collecting and displaying data on a graph. The 
students will also use algorithms to solve multi-digit addition and multi-
digit subtraction problems.

A Social Studies test (chapter 1) will be on Tuesday, October 9, 2007.
We have had a great start to the new school year.  We are learning that the 
student planner is a very important tool in the 4th grade.  All homework is 
written daily and should be checked by parents.

There are some new additions to Room 18.  Our hermits crabs have 
arrived.....and they have names.  Their names are:  Hermzi, Hermy, Crystal, 
Hayden. 
Hermits Crabs from Room 14 are named Gary, Shelly, Herman, Rocky.
Crabitats from Room 12 include hermit crabs named Sammy, Sandi, Squirt Jr. 
and Shi.


Science - We are studying "habitats" especially the habitats of hermit 
crabs. Students have already researched isopods and beetles.  Their next 
assignment will be to research "hermit crabs".  They have 5 questions to 
guide their research.

Math -  "VOLUME" is the word for the next week.  They will learn the formula 
for volume and practice how to find it.

Social Studies - Students are reading about New Jersey and its development 
after World War II.



Math test - scheduled for May 15th.  The test will be on the "rate" unit.
Social Studies test - scheduled for May 17th.  Test will be on Unit 8....the 
unit about World War I and World War II.

STUDENTS HAVE BEEN PRACTICING THE STEPS FOR LONG DIVISION. WE HAVE BEEN

EXPLAIN ABOUT THE MONKEYS THAT HELPED THEM TO DIVIDE.

THERE WILL BE SCIENCE TEST ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH.  STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW 
THE LAYERS OF THE EARTH, IN ORDER, AND A FACT ABOUT EACH LAYER. THEY SHOULD 
ALSO KNOW THE MEANING OF "CIRCUMPOLAR CONSTELLATION".  THEY WILL BE ASKED TO

Week of September 25, 2006

Science - Students are making food chains, which they will combine into one 
big food web.  It is important for students to realize that organisms eat 
more than one food in order to survive.  We will continue with a study of 
the 
environment.

Math - This week the students will learn to use a compass.  It will take a 
few practice circles before they master the compass...and they keep trying! 
An assessment test will be scheduled for next week.  Each day this week, 
they 
will practice math facts with a "mad minute". Results will be sent home when 
we have completed all the sheets.

Social Studies - After a review of different map skills, we began our study 
of New Jersey this week. The first lesson is about the geography of New 
Jersey. Students are surprised to learn that we have mountains in New 
Jersey...and I stress that their 6th grade camping experience will take 
place 
in these mountains!  Every page of the book offers a new and interesting 
fact 
about our great state. (There will be a test in the near future....probably 
at the end of next week)










Week of May 15, 2006
SCIENCE- Our plants are growing and growing.  Students have been measuring 
and recording their growth.  They can actually see the results of light, 
water, and carbon dioxide on the plants!
MATH - The test on Unit 13 will be on Monday, May 15th.  The test is on 
volume and identifying the edges, vertices and faces of geometric figures.
SOCIAL STUDIES - As soon as we complete our study of industries in New 
Jersey 
we will have a test.

WEEK OF MAY 1, 2006
SCIENCE - WE HAVE PLANTED BEANS!  STUDENTS WILL RECORD AND GRAPH THEIR 
GROWTH FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.  HABITATS AND RESEARCH ON ISOPODS, BEETLES, 
AND HERMIT CRABS WILL BE OUR NEXT FOCUS.

MATH- 
STUDENTS WILL USE RATE TABLES TO DISPLAY DATA TO UNDERSTAND IT.  WE WILL USE 
RATE TABLES FOR USE IN COMPARSION SHOPPING.

SOCIAL STUDIES - A TEST ON "INDUSTRY" WILL BE GIVEN ON FRIDAY, MAY 5TH.

WEEK OF MARCH 20, 2006
"NJASK" WEEK - CHILDREN WILL NEED TO GET PLENTY OF SLEEP THIS WEEK.  SEND 
THEM OFF TO SCHOOL WITH A GOOD BREAKFAST AND A BOOK TO READ AFTER THEY 
COMPLETE EACH PART OF THE NJASK TESTS.  THE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN PREPARED AND 
THEY (AND THE TEACHERS) WILL BE GLAD WHEN THE WEEK IS OVER!




Week of March 6, 2006
SCIENCE - Students will be assessed on "RK" and relative position on Friday, 
March 10,2006.
MATH- We will be using formulas to find the AREA of figures. Unit 10 tests 
will be sent home this week.  Please sign and return.  We will continue to 
practice multiplication and division.
SOCIAL STUDIES - Students will be writing letters pretending they are 
soldiers in the Revolutionary War using information they learned.  A test on 
this unit will be given on 3/14/06.

WEEK  of  FEBRUARY 27, 2006
MATH - Unit 10 assessment will be on Wednesday, March 1, 2006.  Students 
will be assessed on using a division algorithm, solving multiplication and 
division number stories.  (Division problems will be 2 and 3 digit numbers 
using a 1 or 2 digit divisor, for example 234/4 or 234/21) Using Journal 
page 318 as practice will be helpful.
SCIENCE - We have completed the Astronomy Journals and we will now be 
working in the "Relative Motion Journal".  Student posters on Sally Ride, J. 
F. Kennedy, Neil Armstrong and Gus Grissom are displayed in the hallway for 
all to enjoy.  Good Job!
SOCIAL STUDIES - We will continue our study of New Jersey's part in the 
American Revolution. This week the students will be researching some 
Revolutionists.


WEEK OF FEBRUARY 13, 2006
SCIENCE - ZODIAC TESTS HAVE BEEN SENT HOME THIS WEEK.  (THE GRADES WERE VERY 
GOOD!)  WE HAVE ALMOST COMPLETED THE ASTRONOMY JOURNALS AND THEY WILL BE 
SENT 
HOME SOON.  STUDENTS SHOULD KEEP THEIR JOURNAL AS THEY ARE A GOOD SOURCE OF 
INFORMATION. KEEP LOOKING AT THE NIGHTTIME SKY.
 
MATH - "Computation Packets" and "Problem Solving Packets" for the third 
marking period were sent home.  The "problem solving" packet provides 
excellent practice for the NJ ASK and should be completed at home.  
The "computation packet" should be completed and returned by 2/28/06. 
WE ARE LEARNING LONG DIVISION THIS WEEK.  AN EASY WAY TO REMEMBER THE STEPS 
FOR DIVISION IS "DIRTY MONKEYS SMELL BAD" (IT SOUNDS STRANGE BUT IT WORKS!)
******Unit 7 assessments will be returned this week.  Please sign and return 
the tests.

SOCIAL STUDIES - STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO LOCATE BATTLEGROUNDS OF THE 
AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN NEW JERSEY. LATER IN THE WEEK THEY WILL RESEARCH SOME 
REVOLUTIONISTS FROM NEW JERSEY.


WEEK OF FEBRUARY 6,2006
Science - There will be a test on Zodiac stories on Friday, February 10, 
2006.  Students have copied the information in their science folders.
Math - Unit 7 assessment test on Thursday, February 9, 2006.  Use Journal 
p.231 and Study Link 76 for practice and review.
Social Studies - Students are reading about New Jersey's early settlers. New 
Jersey collages are beautifully done and hanging in the hall for all to 
enjoy.


The 4th graders are gazing at the nighttime skies!! Each evening they should 
be searching the skies for constellations, using the star maps for 
December/January.  They should also be drawing the phases of the moon on 
their December calendars.  We are spending time in the StarLab Planetarium 
observing and discussing the constellations as they move across the sky.  
During this time, the 4th graders will be assigned pages in their Astronomy 
Journal to read and/or complete. They will be tested on this material during 
the week of December 10th.  They are also graded on their knowledge of the 
material while in the StarLab.
Math Information-
Math Lessons focus on the degrees in a circle, drawing and measuring angles, 
and identifying acute, obtuse, reflex angles and extended multiplication 
facts They will also be tested on this during the week of December 10th.   

Social Studies-
The students are busy collecting information on their notecards for their 
State Research Reports.  They are learning all kinds of interesting things 
about the United States. Each student has a different state and there are 4 
notecards to complete.  All work will be completed in school.


week of December 19, 2005

Unit 5 Math test results will be sent home this week.  Our next focus will 
be 
on fractions, which is Unit 6.
In Social Studies, the students are busy note taking for their  reports.  We 
will be in the ComputerLab this week to add some additional information to 
our note taking for the state research papers. 
Learning about more of the Native American constellations will continue in 
the StarLab this week.  Students are working on some pages in the Astronomy 
Journals.

HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT HOLIDAY AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!  See you next year!

Week of January 9, 2006
Math:
Students will be learning about fractions and equivalent fractions in this 
unit.  They will also change fractions into decimals and percents.

Science:
The Greek constellations will be studied in the StarLab.  Some nights it 
will be easy to see Orion's belt, while looking for some of the  
constellations.  Be sure to use the star map for January and February. (A 
test, on the constellations and asterisms, is scheduled for next week.)

Social Studies:
Students will be using 2 resources for presentation of a topic in the Lenape 
culture. Each group will present to the class and be evaluated using a 
rubric.  All of this should take about a week.


JANUARY 23, 2006
Science - We will be studying more of the Greek constellations.  By 
the end of the week we will have completed a list of the Zodiac 
constellations
Our list will include the name of the constellation and a brief story. 
(There 
will be a short quiz on these constellations.)
The StarLab Planetarium leaves February 2nd.

Social Studies - Explorers and early settlers will be the topic of study as 
we continue learning about New Jersey this week. Study Guides will be sent 
home to be completed as we complete each section in this unit.

Math - Look for the Unit 6 assessments this week. They will be returned 
early 
in the week. Students have completed  Journal #1 and now have their 
Journal #2. (Journal 1 will be sent home at the end of the week after we 
complete and correct a few more 
pages)                                        
In Unit 7, students will be using very large numbers.(for
example, numbers in the millions) We will be talking about population 
counts, 
the census, and large amounts of money.  Students will learn to write large 
numbers using exponents.
