As your child begins to learn how to read, there are several strategies

that they can use to help them decode unfamiliar words. Encourage

your beginner readers to use these strategies when they get stuck on

a word!

• Look at the pictures.
• Get your mouth ready to say the first sound.
• Think about what would make sense.
• Look for word chunks you know.
• Check for rhyming patterns.
• Check for a repeating pattern.
• Look for special beginnings or endings.
