List of Students Participating in Summer Programs

Oh, the places they went and the things they did ***********************************************************************************************

Each Summer, our students participate in some exciting programs and activities. This summer was no exception.

The following students will be taking courses, participating in Summer Enrichment Programs, or doing volunteer work at the following colleges, universities or organizations.

Kinya Alexander

Was selected by the Junior Statesmen Foundation to attend the 2008 Georgetown II Summer School where she took a college level course is US Foreign Policy. She had the opportunity to meet and question political leaders, polish her debating skills, and experience politics in our Nation’s Capital

Kinya was also selected to attend the 2008 NJ Girls State to be held at Georgian Court University at the end of June. This program is designed to assist participants in understanding comprehending, and appreciating their roles as citizens.

Representatives from the Girls State program in each state will be elected to attend the national program, Girls Nation, which is took place in Washington, D.C., in July.

Ruthly Cadestin

Attended Middlesex County College’s engineering camp where she will learn about the career options in the field of engineering, visit industry sites, and meet professionals in the field.

Deadra Cadet

Participated in a two week Summer Enrichment Program at Penn State, where she took courses in Law and Government. In addition, Deandra  also participated in Penn State’s Theater Workshop

Sonia Chandi

Took a Chemistry course at Middlesex County College

Bintu Conteh

Bintu was selected to participate in the highly competitive Musical Theater Track of the 2008 Summer Acting Conservatory for High School Students at Rutger’s Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Brunswick.

Kathryna Corpuz

Participated in two summer programs.

She will attend the RISE Summer Program at Rowan University which provides participants with an introduction to the field of Engineering. The seminar series included hands-on- activities, laboratory clinics, discussions, campus tours, and industry field trips.

Kathyrna also participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Washington, DC, where she learned about the educational requirements, career options, clinical practice, and ethical and legal issues facing medical professionals today.

Rachel Del Valle

Was accepted into the New York University Summer PreCollege Program for Dramatic Literature. This course explored New York humor through a variety of venues: stand-up comedy, television, film, literature, advertising, and personal narratives.

Jatinder Dhami

Jatinder was engaged in three programs this summer.

At Middlesex County College, she will participate in the Biotechical Summer Institute for High School Scholars. This is an intensive hands-on, laboratory-based course in modern DNA analyses and protein purification techniques for high school students.

Jatinder also participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at Georgetown University.

In addition, she worked as a volunteer at JFK Hospital.

Tolulope Falae

Attended the 2008 Constitutional Academy in Washington, DC. She was be one of thirty high school juniors and seniors who  participated in this week long college level residential program. Through discussions, simulations, and hands-on experiences related to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the participants will deepen their understanding of the beliefs and ideals of our nation’s Founders, as well as how those 18th century ideals remain relevant in the 21st century. Tolulope was awarded a scholarship to attend this program.

Mikhaila Zabat

Will participate as members of the People to People Student Ambassador Program. This program was founded in 1956 by President Eisenhower who believed that if ordinary citizens of different nations were able to communicate directly, differences could be resolved. Erica and Mikhaila will travel to France, Italy, and Malta during this 20 day adventure and Dominique will go to Austria, New Zealand, and Fiji.

Patricia Lopez

Will again participate in Sisters Under the Sails, a leadership program for high school girls abroad the tall ship, Unicorn. As a member of the crew, Patricia will take part in a nautical, academic, cultural, and college experience. In addition, participants are encouraged to think about their futures and have the opportunity to experience college level courses in history, sociology, math, and art.

Chelsea Madeira

Alexandra Selvaratnam

Both students will attend Lead America’s Medicine and Healthcare Program which enables students to explore the world of medicine and examine issues relating to the medical profession. A highlight of the program is that students will work with “Francis” a life-like robot to diagnose normal and abnormal physiology. Chelsea will be going to Fordham University in New York and Alexandra will be going to Washington, DC

Amanpreet Mashiana

Will attend the Biotechical Summer Institute for High School Scholars. This program provides the opportunity to do an intensive hands-on, laboratory work in modern DNA analyses and protein purification techniques.

Victoria McCarthy

Was selected to participate in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). She will be immersed in French culture while studying literature, art and philosophy. She will travel to Paris and visit other cities in France over a two week period.

Alexandra Mojica

Will participate in the Lead America Program in CSI: Forensic Science at Fordham University, NYC. Alexandra will learn the techniques/skills used by crime scene investigators to solve cases, in addition to visiting places such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Angela Parente

Will attend the Global Leadership Summit at Catholic University in Washington, DC, and at Fordham University in NYC. She will be visiting historic sites and the United Nations.

Monique Pineros

Was selected to participate in the Trinitas Nursing Camp. During this week long program, students learn what it is like to be a nurse. They will partner with nurse mentors, attend educational sessions, take tours, and listen to guest lecturers.

Chamanchandi Randhawa

Will attend Middlesex County College where she will take a college level Biology course. In addition, she will work as a volunteer at JFK Hospital.

Celeste Simmons and

Andrea Whittle

Will be Sports Ambassadors in the People to People Program. Celeste will travel to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. Andrea will be going to Holland

Amanda Skuriat

Was selected to attend the HOBY Youth Leadership Conference at Monmouth University. This leadership seminar is designed to help high school sophomores recognize their talents and apply them as effective leaders in their schools, workplace, and communities.

Meredith Lubas

Who attended the HOBY Youth Leadership Conference last summer was selected to return to the HOBY Leadership Conference this year as a seminar assistant.

Jacqueline Somogyi

Was selected to participate in the NJ Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology at Rutgers University

Claire Teasdale

Wills study the Language of Film as a participant at the New York University, Pre College Summer Program, which is taught by highly acclaimed college professors. In addition, students experience college life and New York City attractions.

Ada Yeung and Dominique Garrett

Will both participate in the Douglass Science Institute, a residential program for young woman who want to explore a variety of areas including biology, chemistry, computers, environmental and marine sciences, engineering, physics, and mathematics. There are interactive workshops, exploration of careers in non-traditional workplaces, and leadership skill building. The Merck Institute for Science Education will again sponsor Ada’s participation in this program.

Looking for a way to express your creativity the summer? The Savannah College of Art and Design offers summer programs in July. Topics include animation, digital photography, drawing, fashion, furniture design, and sequential art.

ASM Materials Camp, Ohio

Math, Sciences, Engineering, and Computer Science/Technology. Weeklong academic camp features highly interactive, lab-based activity for students entering junior or senior year. Highly motivated inquisitive learners with math and science aptitude should apply. This camp is FREE to participants.
