Holocaust/Genocide
This year we will be exploring the difficult topic of genocide. We will not only be learning about the Holocaust, but also other genocides that have occurred during the twentieth century. We will trace the roots of prejudice through the rise of discrimination and the ultimate genocide. While it is important that you learn the facts about genocide, hopefully you will also learn life lessons which you will be able to share with others.
Requirements:
There is no one textbook that we will be using. Each semester you will be reading a different book based on the topics we are covering.
The Diary of Anne Frank, Definitive Edition
Rena's Promise by Rena Korneich Gelissen
In My Hands, Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer by Irene Gut Opdyke
Left to Tell, Holocaust in Rwanda by Immaculee Ilibagiza
Course Expectations:
Needless to say regular daily attendance is expected. You are responsible for all work covered in class and to make up any work that you may miss.
You will need a notebook (your choice of style) as well as a folder for handouts. I will let you know when it becomes necessary to purchase the outside reading books.
You are expected to complete homework as assigned. Much of the work will be reading and since most of the written assignments will be based on these readings it is especially important that you keep up with the work. All work must be typed using MLA style unless otherwise noted. If you know that you are going to be absent on the day an assignment is due, please send it to my homework dropbox. You will be evaluated on classroom activities such as tests or quizzes, group assignments etc., as well as reading responses, reflection papers, essays, etc. There is NO midterm or final exam in this course, therefore you will be expected to complete a major project at the end of each semester. There are no exemptions.
I am available before and after school for help. I check my email at least once a day. I also check it each evening at 8:00. If you have any questions, you must post them by then or you will not get an answer that evening. My email is: larndt@msdacademy.org
I hope that this will be an enriching experience for all of us.
