Key Terms:
 
Information Technology (IT) ~ this is a general term that desribes and technology that helps produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.
 
Communications Technology (AKA telecommunications) ~ consists of electromagnetic devices and systems for communicating over long distances.  (ex. telephone, radio, cable tv, etc)
 
Online ~ using a computer or other information device, connected through a network, to access information and services from another computer or information device.
 
Network ~ communications system connecting two or more computers.  (ex. the internet is the largest network)
 
email (AKA electronic mail) ~ messages transmitted over a computer network.
 
distance learning (AKA e-learning) ~ the name given to online education programs.
 
telemedicine ~ medical care delivered via telecommunications.
 
virtual ~ means that something is created, simulated, or carried on by means of a computer or a computer network.
 
downloading ~ transferring data from a remote computer to one's own computer.
 
cyberspace ~ not only the online world and the internet in particular but also the whole wired and wireless world of communications in general.
 
internet ~ "the mother of all networks" a worldwide computer network that connects hundreds of thousands of smaller networks.
 
World Wide Web (AKA www.) ~ an interconnected system of internet computers(called servers) that support specifically formatted documents in multimedia form.
