US History I Honors

Course Description:
Students will explore the political, social, cultural and economic
changes in American history to enable them to grasp a more complete and
accurate story of their nation’s past. They will examine American history
from its first inhabitants, its European origins, the battles of the Civil
War, and the re-formation of a “United” States. Ultimately, the course will
provide students with an appreciation for their nation’s rich cultural
diversity and an understanding of the development of the American character
in a democratic society.

Required Text: The American Pageant by D. Kennedy, L. Cohen, and
                        T. Bailey (school supplied)
		Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation
by Joseph J. Ellis (students required to
                        purchase individually)
Additional documents/handouts will be distributed in class

Course Expectations:
     1.	Attendance and Participation: Daily attendance is essential and
class participation is expected. You are responsible for all work covered in
class. In the event you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to
obtain notes from that day and to have all assigned work completed in a
timely manner. It is recommended that you exchange phone numbers with
another student in the class so you may stay current with any missed work.
Consistent lateness and/or disruptive behavior will result in a phone call
to your parents.
     2.	Notebook: Notes are an essential part of the learning process and
should be kept in a notebook/binder that is neat, legible and organized.
Notes will take several forms such as outlines, class discussions, and
graphic organizers. You are required to bring a notebook to class each day.
     3.	Binder: You are responsible to keep an on-going file of information,
which will include such things as key people, places and terms.
     4.	Books: It is NOT necessary to bring your textbook to class unless
otherwise instructed. You should purchase Founding Brothers by the
beginning of December to be prepared for reading and discussion when
applicable.
     5.	Homework: Homework is essential for participation, understanding
and reinforcing class work. It will be assigned and required. Late work
will be penalized according to MSDA policy (Please see handbook page 6).
All assignments are to be handed to me in person; NO assignment will be
accepted via email and/or by placing it on my desk if I am not present to
accept it. Either case will be handled as late.
     6.	Grading: You will be evaluated based on quizzes, tests, homework
assignments, essays, projects, oral presentations, a research paper and
class participation. (Please see your handbook for MSDA’s policy on grading
page 6).
