AP Gov't

        AP GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS

     COURSE DESCRIPTION:
AP Government and Politics is an intensive study of the formal and
informal structures of the government and the processes of the American
political system, with an emphasis on policy making and implementation. This
year you will develop a critical understanding of the strengths and
weaknesses of the American political system as well as your rights and
responsibilities as American citizens.

     TEXT:
Government in America: People, Politics, and Policy
        American Government: Readings and Cases
        AP Test Prep Book
Barrons-US Gov't and Politics Test Prep
The US COnstitution, What it says, What it means

EXPECTATIONS: Daily attendance is essential and class participation is
expected. You are responsible for all work covered in class, when absent it
is crucial that you obtain notes and make up assigned work, tests, quizzes
etc. in a timely manner. I would suggest that you make an appointment to
meet with me, so we can go over the material you missed.

SUPPLIES: Notebook of you own choosing, bring it to every class. I
recommend a folder or 2 for tests, essays, handouts etc.

BOOKS: It is not necessary to bring your text/ books to class every day,
I will tell you what to bring for each class.

     ASSIGNMENTS:
Written homework will not be assigned every night, but you must keep
up with your readings and review your notes nightly. There is an extensive
amount of reading for this class, in taking this class you made a
committment, so it is CRITICAL that you keep up with all of the readings.
Written assignments will usually be in the form of essays, they are to be
done on the computer using no more than a 12 font. Remember, you cannot
blame the computer as an excuse for handing work in late, late is late and
will result in a lower grade (See handbook) DO NOT E MAIL me work, all
assignments are to be handed to me personally, I will waive this for
extraordinary circumstances only. If you leave something on my desk or in
my mailbox you do so at your own risk. (This year you may use the homework
drop box on gaggle to e mail an assignment)
I will give you a multiple choice packet on each chapter to complete, you
will be graded on each packet. These packets will be very helpful when you
are reviewing.

EXAMS: You will be given a 3 hour exam in Jan. which will be similar
to the AP exam in May. How lucky you are AP GOV"t is the first exam. To
prep for the May exam we will have one full day of prep time.

GRADING: You will be graded based on tests, quizzes, essays (which will
be graded using the AP rubric)

I am available before school and after school, all you need to do is
ask and we will be able to work something out. I am really looking forward
to teaching this course and to teaching all of you. It is not going to be
easy, and I'm sure there will be a day when you ask youself why did I take
this class, but it will be worth in the end. Just keep SMILING!!!!!
