Welcome to Mount Saint Dominic Academy!
This year in Catholic Christianity the focus will be basic teachings and
beliefs of the Christian religion known as Roman Catholicism. Mt. St.Dominic
Academy is a school founded and supported by the Sisters of St. Dominic of
Caldwell; a religious order in the Catholic Church. Therefore, you
begin your life in this school learning about the Catholic Church.
For this course you need a notebook and a folder. You will receive a Journal
in class during the first week of school as well as your text book. The text
book must be covered. If you use a book sock you will need to reinforce the
paper cover of the text with poster board. You may also use heavy paper as a
cover rather than a book sock.
As noted in paragraph one above, the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell
sponsor this high school. Therefore, as newest members of MSDA you will begin
this course learning about St.Dominic, other Dominican saints, and the
Caldwell Dominicans.
You will receive various materials in class to help you better learn this
information.
Week of September 14
Class 1: Introduction to course. Students will receive Journals and learn
about the process of Journal writing. Siena Service Parent Contract is due
9/18. Find the form on Mrs. Scheper's Teach web page.
Class 2: Class expectations based on the Student Handbook will be discussed.
Students receive text book. This must be covered and returned by Friday, 9/18.
Class 3: Students will learn about the life of Dominic deGuzman.
Class 4: Students will learn about the early beginnings of the Dominican
Order.
Covered text book must be returned by today. Siena Service Parent Contract is
due 9/18.
Homework: Study the information learned about St. Dominic and the Dominican
Order. You will have a test on Thursday, September 24
Week of September 21
Class 5: Students will learn about St. Dominic and the origins of the
Sisters of Saint Dominic of Caldwell. Power Point notes must be brought to
class every day.
Class 6: Students will create "test questions" and quiz one another on the
information about Dominic and the Dominican Order. Students will begin
learning about the Dominican saints.Domincan saints packet will be
distributed. Handout must be completed by Friday.
Class 8: Test: St. Dominic and the Dominican Order. (September 25)
Week of September 28
Class 9: Dominican saints will be discussed.
Project on two saints due Wednesday, September 30. Be sure you refer to your
Student Handbook writing guide.
Class 10:
Visit to the Motherhouse. (Period 1)
Be sure to takes notes on the information Sr. Patricia will share. You will
use your notes to write a paper about your experience.
Class 11:
Visit to the chapel at St. Catherine Infirmary. Report to Room 306 first.
Bring the song sheet "Family of Dominic". We will reflect on the Dominican
saints and pray together in the chapel.
Class 12:
You will be given class time to begin your response paper. Be sure you use the
writing guidelines in your Student Handbook for any assignments you hand in
this year. This paper is due Tuesday, October 6 and is worth 20 points.
Paragraph 1: Introduce the theme of the paper. The title you must use is "My
Experiences at the Motherhouse and St.Catherine Infirmary Chapel". In the
opening paragraph you can mention the dates of your visit, where you went, and
the purpose of each visit. Also state that your paper will discuss all these
topics.
Paragraph 2: Information you learned from Sr. Patricia
Paragraph 3: Any new information you learned and/or information that repeated
something already learned in class.
Paragraph 4: Your thoughts and feelings about visiting both the Motherhouse
and the chapel at St. Catherine Infirmary. You might also visit the chapel at
the Motherhouse - include your thoughts, feelings about this if you like.
Paragraph 5: The conclusion of your paper should summarize your experiences.
Week of October 5
Class 13: Paper due (October 6)
Class 14: Begin Chapter 1 of Our Catholic Faith. Learn about the Creeds of
Christianity: the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed. We will discuss the
meaning of creed, the similarities between these two as well as differences.
Students should begin to study this information for a Quiz on Friday, 10/09.
Class 15
Continue notes on the Creeds.
Class 16 Quiz on pp. 18 - 19 of textbook and notes about the Creeds.
Homework: Read pp. 23 - 25; stop at "Intellectual Proofs for . . . " Take
notes in your notebook on the section you read. Your notebook will be checked
on Tuesday.
Complete Discussion Questions p. 23. These must be typed and will be
collected.
Week of October 11: Enjoy the Holiday on 10/12.
Class 17 (October 13)
Review pp. 23 - 25.
Assign: Read the first two Intellectual Proofs for the Existence of God by
Aquinas. In your notebook write each in your own words. Discuss whether or
not it helps you believe in God
No class (October 14): Service Day
Class 18 (October 15): Liturgy Workshop
Class 19 (October 16): Discuss the Intellectual Proofs for the Existence of
God.
Assignment: Read p. 26
Complete the questions on the top of p.27 in your notebook.
Complete the Discussion Questions p. 27 to be handed in (must be typed). Add
#4 to the three in your book. 4. Which "Heartfelt Proof" makes the most sense
to you? Explain.
Class 20 (October 20): Discuss homework questions p. 27
Chapter 1 Test: Week of October 25.
Class 21 (October 21): Discuss Heartfelt Proofs for God's Existence.
Class 23 (October 22): Assign: Type a one page conversation/dialogue between
yourself and a person who does not believe in God. How would you try to
convince this person to believe in God? Which Proofs would you use?
Class 24 (October 23): Write about your own name : Why was it given to you?
Were you named after someone? How do you feel about your name? Do you know the
meaning of your name? (write in notebook) Discussion follows.
Read p. Read p. 31 "Who is God?". Take notes on this section. Discuss:
Yahweh, omnipresent, omnipotence.
View segment of the Ten Commandments: Moses and the Burning Bush.
Week of October 25:
Tuesday, October 27: Continue discussion "Attributes of God", pp. 31 - 32.
Write the qualities of God listed in notebook.
Read section; "God the Father". Discuss Blessed Trinity, Abba, Father.
Answer questions p. 32 in notebook.
Wednesday, October 28: Read p.37. Write a two page response to the question,
"If God is all - good, why is there evil in the world?"
Thursday,October 29: Study for Chapter 1 Test
Week of November 1
Tuesday, November 3: Review for Chapter 1 Test. Return 2 page paper rough
draft. Students must return on Thursday, November 5 with the rough draft and
final typed copy.
Wednesday, November 4: Chapter 1 Test

Week of November 8
Marking Period 2 begins
Tuesday, Nov. 10: Begin Chapter 2. Create a "bumper sticker" using one of the
quotes on p. 42. Homework: Complete the Discussion questions on p. 43 in
notebook.
Wednesday, Nov. 11: Identify beliefs about Jesus. Define Incarnation.
Identify titles of Jesus.
Homework: Read pp. 44 - 46. take notes on the various titles of Jesus and the
meanings of these.
Thursday, November 12:Homework: Read pp. 47 - 48. (Stop after Centrality of
the Gospels)
Take notes on the evidence of Jesus' existence written by Tacitus,
Suetonius,Pliny the Younger and Josephus. Also, write your thoughts about
this information: Why is it important? Do you believe it proves Jesus'
existence? Why? Why not? Do you feel it is necessary to prove Jesus' existence
with evidence other than the Bible? Explain.
Read pp. 48 - 49 (Contents of the New Testament) and copy this information
into your notebook. Be sure it is in your notebook since you could have a
notebook quiz on this material.
