Welcome to our Sacred Scripture course 2009 - 2010!
This year your required materials include both the Bible and a textbook for
each semester. You will receive these during the first week of class. Your
textbook must be covered by the next class after you receive it. Use paper or
a book sock.
If you use the book sock you must reinforce the covers of the book with thin
cardboard. The textbook is school owned.
You also need a binder with dividers. You will be responsible for various
handouts and worksheets this year and these can be easily attached in a
binder. Be sure you have paper in the binder for taking notes in class. You
may use a regular notebook if necessary.Be sure you have a folder for papers.
Of course, you need your Reflection Journal. This can be any notebook or a
cloth bound journal. Your Reflection Journal is intended for theological
reflection on daily Scripture readings. It will be collected periodically
(every week for the month of September)and you will receive class credit for
your writings.
Week of September 14
Class 1: Introduction to course; class expectations in conjunction with
Student Handbook. Explanation of Journal writing.
Class 2: Textbooks received - these must be covered by next class.
Assignment:Using the "Journey" handout, do the following:
Under the Left foot: Write about a personal "journey" you have recently
experienced. It may have been an actual trip or not. Describe an experience
which helped you grow, learn about yourself, understand others better, or
grow in your relationship with God.
Under the Right foot: Write your thoughts, questions, feelings about
Scripture at this point in your life. Describe your background - how much
have you learned about the Bible?
Class 3: Textbook cover check. Discuss the "Journey" handout and complete it
in class.
Class 4: Complete "Journey" handout in class.
Activity to practice locating Scripture passages. You will receive a handout
in class for this activity.
Homework: Section 6: Due 9/18
Begin reading Chapter 1 - use the guided reading handout and complete up to
and including question #19. (Read pp. 14 - 18) go to Mrs. Scheper's Teacher
Web page to find the first guided reading sheets under "Hebrew Scriptures"
Print out all the pages for Chapter 1 but only complete the questions stated
above.
Homework; Section 5: Due 9/22
Complete the assignment above as you were instructed in class today.

Class 5: Prayer Service (Chapel) Reception of Bibles. Complete Activity to
practice locating Scripture passages. Discuss Chapter 1 Reading Guide.
Class 6: Complete examination of Old Testament book lists in Protestant
Christian Bible and Catholic edition of the Bible.
Homework: Complete Chapter 1 Reading Guide.
Class 7: Discuss Chapter 1 Reading Guide.
Class 8: Complete discussion of Chapter 1 Reading Guide. Create Bible
quotation "bumper sticker".

Class 13: Begin Chapter 3 (Section 6) Discuss the ways stories fill in the
gaps about our personal identity. Group work.
Class 14: Continue Chapter 3 (Section 6) Groups will complete handout on ways
the media tells a story about the values and beliefs of our culture.
View Power Point Chapter 2 and complete Reading Guide #'s 1 - 17.(Section 5)
Homework:
Complete the T/F questions. Complete the thought questions on p. 2 for
homework - must be typed.
Class 15: (Section 6) Discuss group handout. Assignment due Friday,October 9:
Read pp. 60 - 61 in text. In your NOTEBOOK answer the following questions:
1. Is Genesis 1 - 11 historical? Explain.
2. What is meant by stating that Genesis 1 - 3 states truths of creation?
3. Who are important religious figures introduced in Genesis 12, 24, 28,
and 37?
4. Why was oral tradition used by ancient people like the Israelites?
5. When was Genesis probably put into written form? Why was it placed first in
the Bible?
The following assignment will be collected:must be typed!
Read the 2 Creation stories: Genesis 1 - 2:4 and Genesis 2: 5 - 25. Record as
many similarities and differences as you can.
Class 16:
The above assignment was given in class and must be completed by Tuesday,

Read pp.61 - 63 (stop in middle of page 63) Take notes in your notebook(will

be collected) on the similarities/differences in the two Creation stories of

differences between the Genesis flood story and the Epic of Gilgamesh,
historical beliefs about an ancient flood in the ancient world.

Section 5: Read Test pp.65 - 69. Take notes. For homework check the topics

topics; if not be sure to add the missing information.
Section 6: Read pp. 249 - to the first paragraph on p. 253. After reading,
write a two page response to the question, "Why Should Catholics Know the Old
Testament?"
