Homework

September 2009

Every night the children should study their religion notes and spelling
words for Friday's tests.

Each child is encouraged to take their reader home often and look through
the stories, especially if there are not many books available at home. Our
reader (and 4 more to the series) are used in the classroom to teach the
skills needed to be a better reader/writer. In our reading groups the
children will use leveled readers that will not come home. You are always
welcome to come in and check out what book/group your child is currently a
member. You're also always invited to come in and read a story to the class!

Up to 30 minutes of homework will be given most every week day, Thursdays
are usually 'written work free' in order to prepare for Spelling, Religion
and Vocabulary tests on Fridays.

**If your child needs longer that 30 minutes to complete
their homework, please let me know. It is very important to encourage your
child to do their OWN homework and projects. PLEASE - do not do THEIR
homework for them. Homework IS NOT graded. I look over homework for 2
reasons - responsibility of doing it and making sure the student understands
that day's materials when they get home. Nothing new is expected to be
taught at home! When homework is not handed in on time I will note that in
the homework assignment book and the homework is made up during recess. Get
into a good routine of having your child sit down at the
kitchen table or at a desk and begin their homework immediately after
school. Trust me (and this is a mom talking) it is very nice to come home
from work and not have to worry about homework - so get THEM in the routine
of doing THEIR homework. Look it over and offer advice if something is
wrong.I started my children into this routine and they have continued it
through college. Thanks for all your support!
