Using Bullets and Numbers:
Bulleting or numbering a list of list of items
Is another way to enhance the text in your document? You can apply
Bullets or numbers to text that has already been entered into a document or
You bullet or number a list as you type each item.
Applying Bullets and Numbers to an Existing List:
You can use the Formatting toolbar or the Bullets and Numbering dialog
Box to apply bullets or numbers to an existing list. The appropriate method
To use depends on whether you want to apply the default format or to
customize the appearance of the bullets or numbers. The Formatting toolbar
method automatically inserts
the default bullet or numbers.
Formatting Paragraphs:
Just as you can define formatting option for text in your document, you can
also change the formatting of paragraphs.
Aligning Text:
A paragraph in word is different from a grammatical paragraph. A word
paragraph is any amount of text that is followed by a paragraph mark. A
paragraph mark is inserted every time you press the enter key. By default,
when you start Word, you do not see paragraph marks on your screen. You can
display and hide paragraph marks and other nonprinting characters as
necessary by using Standard toolbar’s SHOW/HIDE button.
In Word, text alignment is preset to left. This means that as you type text,
is it aligned with the left margin. To create a more visually appealing
document, you might want to center a paragraph or align it to the right. You
can also justify a paragraph, which aligns the text with both the left and
the right margins. You can change paragraph alignment by clicking the
appropriate button on the Formatting toolbar or by using Paragraph dialog
box’s Indents and Spacing tab, illustrated in Figure 8.
Setting Tabs Using the Tabs Dialog Box:
Tabs are used to align paragraph text at standard positions. World lets you
apply tabs to existing text or set them as you are typing new text. You can
set different tab types to align text in a variety of ways, and you can even
set tabs with leaders. Table 6 lists the tab types and a description of each.
Table 6: Tab Types:
Tab settings are measured by their distance from the left margin. New tab
settings apply to the current paragraph and to any subsequent paragraphs you
create by pressing the Enter key and then typing. This carries the current
paragraph’s formatting, including its tab setting, forward in the document.
The new tab settings do not affect any existing paragraphs below the current
one; however, unless you select the paragraphs before you set the tabs.
By default, Word sets tabs at the half-inch intervals. If you need to set new
tabs or to change the default tabs, one way to do so is by using the Tabs
dialog box under the Format menu, illustrated in Figure 10. When you set a
new tab, Word automatically clears all default tabs to the left of the new
tab setting.
