In Class today we continued our discussion of waves and the Electromagnetic spectrum including
the
origin of these waves.
Also we learned about sound waves (not part of the e-m spectrum)
We reasoned that sound travels much slower than light.

In Class today we discussed the speed of sound waves.
We were given that sound travels at a speed of 343 m/sec in room temperature air.
We then converted this to 0.21 mi/sec (or about 1/5 mi/sec)
We also realized that this is equivalent to 1mi/5 sec
Obviously, sound travels much slower than light.
The speed of light (in a vacuum) is 186,000 mi/sec
This explains why you see an event before you hear it.

Homework: (Due Wednesday, 11.11.09)
1. Answer questions # 1 - 19 on page 31 in the Waves, Sound, and Light textbook.
2. If you haven't already done so, go to the Teacherweb home page, click of the Energy Quiz 4w
icon, use the password: energyquiz4w, and submit your answers.

In class today, we discussed and modeled transverse and longitudinal waves
We also discussed and modeled sound waves using an air blaster toy. We reasoned that sound waves
are longitudinal waves.
Mechanical waves require a medium through which to travel.
Electromagnetic waves do not require a medium - they can propagate through empty space.
