Reading

"No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally (and
often far more) worth reading at the age of fifty."
~ C. S. Lewis

* Read 20 minutes at least 5 nights per week (Of course, you can read more!)!
* Log your minutes and title in the correct date's box. Each Sunday, please
have a parent/guardian sign that you have read for those days.
* Have a "just right" independent reading book in class at all times.
* READING IS THINKING! Studies have shown that people do their best
thinking when they are in a quiet setting.

OTHER INFORMATION:
* Each student will complete two reaction responses per month (2nd and 4th
weeks of the month, unless otherwise specified).

** Remember, you do not have to read an entire book to complete this
response. Just complete the Thinkmark, choose a Thinkbox, and respond using
our format. Refer back to the examples we did in class ("The Harmonica," "The
Memory Coat," and "Coal Country Christmas") to help you organize your
thoughts.

* For the month of OCTOBER, each student will generate a one paragraph
reaction response on an independent reading book. This will include the topic
sentence, one reason, examples to support the reason, and a closing statement
that restates the topic sentence in a new way.

* For the month of NOVEMBER, each student will generate a two paragraph
reaction response on an independent reading book. This will include the topic
sentence, two reasons (in separate paragraphs), examples to support each
reason, and a closing statement that restates the topic sentence in a new
way.

* For the rest of the year (DECEMBER-JUNE), each student will generate the
full three paragraph reaction response on an independent reading book.

* Once a student finishes an independent reading book, he/she is responsible
for completing a "Book Recommendation" sheet (sheets are located in the
classroom) within two days. We will bring these recommendations to the
library when we are checking out books.

* Remember to make wise book choices. Recall all of the ways we choose
books that we discussed in class. Refer to your "Book Minimum" sheet
(download from "Useful Documents") and the notes in your Reader's Notebook
when making choices. Happy Reading!
